temperature?

hey abusers!

ok guys, i just finished puttin together my msi k7t266 pro2.....its pretty nice! except i think its runnin kinda warm. i have a athlon 1.2. i have a fan at the fron of my case and back plus the psu's fan in the back. im using the volcano 6cu+ hsf and im running temps of 118degrees and up just on idle. nothing is overclocked. do i need to get another fan or better hsf? just give me all your info

congrats on the exam...
the temps seem ok to me for a volcano..

but you may want to consider another cooler for overclocking.. (if you choose to do so)

You did use thermal grease right? Artic Silver is prolly the best thermal grease available. Like $8 or so for a tube like thing of it.

Instead of Arctic Silver... get Artic Alumina (same makers as AS)
Alumina performs on par w/ Silver and can be had for silver... not to mention it's a hell of a lot easier to clean off your CPU and hands

No doubt, get alumina. I've tested it against arctic silver 2 and the new as 3 and alumina is still by far my choice.

As for heatsinsk, as Ed said check out our reviews at http://www.pcabusers.com and decide which is best for you. Off hand the better quiet ones are the Dr Thermal heatsinks. They cool most excellent.

Most of the copper ones come with a lawnmower loud fan. Which really is best to use mowing your lawn. Or if you prefer, scaring of the dogs for miles.

Just don't get too much alumina on if you ever plan on using an XP it soaks into that organic part of the chip and leaves a nasty looking grease stain on it... Personally i think thats why my 1700+ only lasted 6 hours... I got a lil too much and it smushed out when i put the HSF on after i finally got pissed and pulled the chip after it locking up and spontaneously rebooting by itself i seen that greasey spot on the chip and was like WTF is that...

Something happend to the chip thats all i know... Newegg is sending the new one out today they said they tested it and it was bad and was sending a replacement... I might have just got a bad chip its hard saying.

I'm going to insert a quick plug here for a great deal - Millenium Thermal's liquidating their Glaciator I's for $17.50 (!). All-copper, quiet fan, heavy as a brick. I have one in the GF's box, a 1.2 like yours, and it keeps her temp around 105F running Genome@Home 24/7 in a somewhat restricted case.

This thing is based around quietness. I have a Glaciator I on a 1.2 as well. The fan is audible (more so than the Panaflow LA1, if that's what it's called), but it's basically the sound of air being moved.
I think the Glaciator II is lighter than the I. They're both pretty beefy though. I'm not sure what the other differences are.
