i have an 56x artec cd drive that speeds way up, sounds like uts gonna fly out of the box
then slows down and stops, keeps repeating this until i get pissed and remove the cd. it does it with any cd. this POS is driving me crazy. i cant even install anything. the rom is brand new, got it today.

You could try to slow down the CD drive with CD Bremse , your drive isn't listed but the Artec 40x , so it might still work with yours. this program enables you to slow down the speed of most CD drives.
If you can slow it to like 20x speed and it still won't read, then it should be considered kaputt.
This spinning up and down makes it look like the drive can't read the data and the error correction slows the drive down until it can read the data again ... speeding up and down continiously is not a good sign when it does it with all CDs.
