Helllp!! AGP CARD Dont work right
hello, i finally got my agp card and now i really regret it. i got a pny geforce2 ti. it seems to work
until i want to play a game or run an install program, doesnt matter what install program always freezes
when copying files. some times it freezes on the net but takes longer than on an install prog. i ran 3d mark 2001 on it it didnt freeze that. scored 4179 btw ive been f*cking with this all day to no avail i would really appreciate some help. im rdy to throw the damn thing. this is what i tried so far.
disabling all xtras
mipmap,anitializing, fog emulation,
changed irqs, tried 9,10,11, thats all the adjust ment this board has i think
changed memory address from da-db-e1-ff
messed with fast write, post write, read wait state, write wait state, assign irq,vga pallette snoop
clearing cmos
removed battery & cleared cmos
unplugged all non essiential stuff 2 cd roms 1 hdd 1 modem, turned off sound , lan, raid ,2 case fans
for power problem if any
tries running fsb at 100 instead of 133mhz
all that didnt help so i hope you can at least point me in the right direction.

if it runs 3dmark without freezing, that tusually means the vid card is ok - you've obviously got some kind of conflict working - if you can give us more info, we'll help you figure it out
what was the old vid cards? were all drivers completely uninstalled
if onboard video, it it disabled?
what os are u using?
which drivers are u using for the video card?
what mobo/chipset?

I would download the drivers from the link below and give them a try before I threw the towel in on the PNY card

I'm a relative rookie WRT GeForce issues, but wvjohn made a good point: a defective vidcard is likely gonna show up in 3dMark.
In addition to trying two or three of the most recent driver sets, I'd be:
- End-Tasking all but vital TSR's while experimenting.
- Maybe using PowerStrip or something to underclock the vidcard, in case the RAM or engine were marginal.
It's the "freeze while running any installer" that gets me. With that as a symptom alone, I'd say you overwrote the wrong .dll with the vidcard, unbeknownst to you. And that's the type of thing they publish new drivers for.
Edit: damn, I'm so tired I'm trying telepathy instead of complete sentences.

Some general suggestions:
- I recommend the reference drivers over the manufacturer's. Do NOT use beta or leaked drivers - use only the latest official reference drivers. Get them here: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=drivers
- Remove any utilities for your old video card (Voodoo cards for instance install 3Dfx tools which MUST be removed via the Add/Remove icon in Control Panel). Also, you should ALWAYS change the video driver to "Standard VGA" first before swapping cards to purge the old driver. If you didn't do that before, do it now. Change it to "Standard VGA", reboot and it'll redetect the geforce and ask you for drivers.
- If you're overclocking (either the vid card or the cpu), don't and see if that helps.
- In the motherboard's BIOS menu, make sure that "Assign IRQ to VGA" is enabled and that both "Video BIOS Caching" and "Video Ram Shadow" are disabled. Set "AGP Aperature" to 64.
- The Geforce does NOT like to share an IRQ with other devices - make sure it's the only card using it's IRQ. If you can't change the IRQ for the conflicting card in Device Manager, then you must move the card to another slot.
- You may not have the proper or the latest drivers for you motherboard's APG to PCI Bridge. The Geforce is a true AGP card (unlike 3Dfx cards) and is very fussy about having the AGP bus setup properly. This is a MAJOR gotcha. Windows will install the wrong mobo drivers until you update them. There should be drivers that came with your motherboard on a CD, but you should download the latest version from the motherboard manufacurer's web site.
- It's possible that some other device is causing the problem. Best way to isolate it is to pull ALL your cards except the vid card (IMPORTANT: note what slot each card was installed in). Play the misbehaving game and see if it runs stable (yes, the game should run just fine without a sound card installed). If it behaves, install each card ONE BY ONE starting with the sound card until you isolate the bad boy. It's important to put the cards back in their original slots to avoid PCI IRQ Sharing problems (see next paragraph).
- You may have a card that has a PCI IRQ channel sharing problem (NOT the same as an IRQ conflict). The SBLive, NICs and SCSI controllers are very prone to this. Fix is essentially the same as mentioned in the previous paragraph except when you find the misbehaving card, you need to move it to another slot. More details on this problem here: http://soldcentralfl.com/quakecoop/glfaq5.htm#5_9
- You may have background app running causing problems. I like to run a very clean system when play - I want NOTHING running in the background. Don't run anything in the background: Virus Scanners, disk utils, reminder programs, taskbar shortcuts for Real Player, AOL Instant Messenger, etc). If you have Win98 run MSCONFIG.EXE click on the Startup tab. Uncheck anything you don't need running - Windows ONLY requires System Tray, Task Monitor and Power Profile to run properly (and you can lose Power Profile if your computer doesn't use sleep mode). Uncheck everything else unless it's required by something.

no, the computer nor the vid card is over clocked. i tried the stuff penguin said above and still the same prob. only with the updated driver then it froze 3d mark. then i put the original driver back in and it froze 3d mark. if all these cards are such a pain, then i dont really want one, anyway i sent the sucker back. are there any other good cards that will install in 15 mins or less trouble free?

That's really an exception. Geforce cards are generally a rock. Maybe it's a bad card.
What card did you have installed previously? Are you certain you removed all drivers and utilities for it?
I've been through a Geforce DDR, GF2 and now a GF3 T-200. Been VERY happy with them all. I never use the drivers that come with the card, only the latest reference drivers.

mr penguin: i formatted the hdd with the geforce card installed. then a installed windows, then the latest via 4 in 1 drivers then the drivers for the geforce dl'ed from the nvidia site. i would say that the risk of muddled drivers is very small.

Is this Windows XP by the way? There is an issue with the VIA chipset and NVidia cards running under XP. There's a patch on VIA's site, but by now the latest 4-in-1 SHOULD have incorporated the patch I'd think.
Only other thing I can think of.

No sir, Mr. Flying penguin, it is win 98 se, i agree that the 4 in one driver should be up to snuff now.
i havent seen any other posts with trouble with the Soyo Dragon mobo, mine is the old version but both versions use the same bios upgrades, of which mine has the latest. i have returned the pny geforce and am currently awaiting another one. hopefully the replacment will work right or i may be soured on nvidia forever. when i get the new one ill let you all know how it turns out, if you care.
