Dead mobo or CPU or both?

Post by dag16 »

So I just was wondering people's thoughts on this...
I got a new mobob(EPOX EP-8K7A) and CPU(Athlon XP 1600).
Put them together started the thing up and after about 2 seconds, everything stopped.
Looked at the mobo carefully and found a dead resistor.
I rma'd the motherboard and got a new one, put the same CPU in, and after about two seconds all power was lost. I figured I had blown the CPU on the first bad board, so I ran to the store and picked p a new one. About 2 more seconds after power up, same crap happenned.
My thoughts are that the first bas mobo blew the first CPU. The bad CPU then blew the second mobo, which in turn blew the second CPU..
What do you all think of this?
Have you seen anything like this?
and what do you think the chances are that my RAM and vide card are fried?
When I get the new CPU/mobo from the RMA should I just scrap the RAM in case there's a short in there as well?
thanks for any thoughts..

i'd swap out that power source before i did anything with shiny new parts -

also, are u sure that the ps has the juice to handle that cpu/mobo combo? some mobos (an msi i have for instance) spin up briefly when hooked up - if there isn't enough juice when you actually try to boot up, it just sits there making fun of you

my quick thoughts and Welcome!

What kind of cooling do you have on the CPU? Also, what do you mean when you say everything stopped? Did all the fans and hard drives stop spinning?

I have a 300 Watt power suply. I asked the company to RMA me one of them alos, just in case that was destroyed too.
When I say stopped, I mean all of the fans stopped spinning an the diagonostic LEDs turned off. The thing that makes em think everything is blown is that the initial power up, things worked for a few seconds, but each poer-up after that, things would only startup for 1/2 second or so...
I don't know what I have for cooling(came with the motherboard/processor combo), but it's a huge heatsink with a pretty sizable fan.
Also, what should happen if I pull out the chip and power on, should all start up?
Thanks again..
