"buy a MAC"
If only Macs used usable software, I might now consider one. Over 5 yrs of Microsofts OS/software related issues and I'm no more thrilled about it now as I was then.

I was running W2K but it wasn't exactly legal. I do own a full copy of 98SE so I figured it was time to go legal and I purchased the Pro upgrade. I just got it installed and it seems to work pretty good. Funny thing was it never asked me to prove I was upgrading and I did a clean install. I got a GF3 for the main video and a Voodoo 3 PCI for the secondary video. There were newer Voodoo 3 drivers in the Windows Update when I ran it and they installed ok but the Voodoo 3 was supported out of the box. It's too early to tell if every thing works ok for sure but all seems fine so far.

Well I just installed the XP on a testbed system and it's locking up... might be the cheap POS 2Mb Trident card I'm using on the testbed. I'll have to pop something else in there.
God that interface is ugly and a waste of space (half the screen just to show me my basic Start menu items?)... if it was my workstation I'd be using the Classic Windows appearance option thank you very much.

renovation?
Odd, I have an XP Pro full version... Was waiting to do clean
install on a new box next week, so haven't even opened the box
yet.
Just curious, how do you tell whether you have a corporate
serial # version? Is there something special in the packaging
or ???

I have some questions on the "dual boot" thing since I've never done that before.
I am running 98.
How do I set XP up for dual boot? It that in the options when installing XP?
If I did it, would all my programs that I used in 98 still open in XP without re-installing anything?
Once I did this, could I un-install one of the operating systems with it affecting the other? If so, how?
I have one HDD, split evenly into two partitions. Would it be better to install XP in the other partition from 98?
Please enlighten me here. Thanks

You should make a new thread with all these questions but I'm answering them as far as I can
Just install XP to a free partition, it will be aware of 98 and put it into it's bootloader as an option.
Not exactly, you won't have any of the programs in your START|PROGRAMS menu but you should be able to open them clicking on their .exe files. You have to reinstall them if you want them in your START|PROGRAMS menu.
Pretty much depends in which OS you want to remove, to many variables here for a short answer, but yes, it can be done.

Yes, DO NOT install two OS into the same partition, this is asking for trouble. Install XP into the second partition (or an extra one when you can create one, but it has to be at least 3GB in size for XP).I have one HDD, split evenly into two partitions. Ok.
Now if I did re-install all the programs in XP so they would all be in the Start/Menu, how would that then affect running those same programs back in 98?
This is a rather appealing way to install XP to me. If you read my post in the "Win XP or 2000 Poll" thread, you know what I'm talking about.
This way if I have any compatibility problems with my programs, I could always go back and use 98 to run them. Is this correct?

Well, reinstalling programs into the same location under WinXP shouldn't hurt the installation from use under Win98 ... BUT there can be problems when those programs are patched ... just open a new thread with all your questions instead of continued hijacking this poll, mmmmkay ?
You'll get much more attention to your questions that way

Well I have had my XP Pro up and running for a couple of weeks now.
I first did an upgrade at work from 98 to XP Home Edition.
I then did an upgrade on my home computer from Windows ME to XP Pro. My son also did an upgrade from 98 to XP Pro.
For all that swear by a clean install, all I can say is the three upgrades installed without a hitch. Very smooth.
The usual minor things like doing a couple of re-installs of some programs that apparently got confused, and some additional drivers.
Well with seeing XP run on three systems, all I can say is I am extremely satisfied with it. I was a bit nervous about doing this at first being I had been a long time 98/ME guy with no experience with NT/2000/XP at all.
I am impressed with the features, stability, and especially with the memory handling. Finally an operating system that knows what it's doing in the memory area.
I am an avid gamer and have not had one single glitch with any of my games. My one complaint is XP and the refresh rate issue. It's hard to believe for me that Microsoft built an operating system of this caliber and has to have a third party program to do with the refresh rates what it should have been able to do itself. I wonder how Bill Gates adjusts his refresh rates. Maybe he is still using 98? Heh heh.
I am still learning all the nuances of tweaking this OS but that is part of the fun. XP is not nearly as hard to run and control as I was lead to believe. I'm getting more comfortable with it as I go.
The Event Viewer is a trip. Like a diary of daily activity. I was concerned at first when I saw some errors in it but realized once you start disabling some services it will cry a bit about them not running.
One issue I have not been able to figure out. I have a 250 zip drive. In the Event Viewer it lists a warning that the driver has disabled the disk write caching for it. In Device Manager it shows it a enabled. Beats me on that one. I also have a 250 zip in the other two machines and it shows the same thing.
All in all though, I am very happy I made the move.
