@home --> Comcast, Anyone on it with a router?

I have a friend I am trying to help out here.
He has Comcast.net and they just switched from @home to their own network.
Everything worked before.
Now when he plugs his Computer (WinXP) to the modem he gets an IP and everything works great.
But when he connects the router to the modem the router will not get a WAN IP.
The router is setup (so he tells me ... he is in another town) JUST LIKE the computer. But it will not get an IP from the Modem.

Anyone here use the new Comcast.net network and know what is 'required' to get an IP?

when you connect router to any broadband DSL OR Cable you need to set the router to the original IP adress issued to him by comcast. when the modem is connected to his pc in CommandPrompt type in
ipconfig/all it will tell you everything DHCP, IP adress, DNS etc. Now once that is done call comcast and give them the mac address on your router. The router does not receive connection because it is not recognized by comcast network. The only mac address they have is of the cable modem. So you would have to call comcast and give them the new mac address which would be of the router then you will be set off sharing cable broadband with all computers. i know this because i had to do it with ATT Broadband i had the same problem it was fixed by usin the steps above

it needs to insert the old IP address issued by comacast in routers configuration and also DNS, DHCP, ETC. once that is done it will give out LAN AND WAN IP Address

The only thing that I dont understand is that they said to set the IP to obtain...and that is how the computer is setup and it gets an IP from Comcast. I wouldnt think that I would manually enter in the IP in the router I have a copy of the IP/NIC info when the Computer gets connected and I can have him try it, tho.

but I found the answer to that and no....the cable company cares about the MAC on the modem and the MAC on the computer (or router in this case).

RUBBERDUCKIE: How's the performance of the new Comcast network? I've got Comcast here in Central Florida but they haven't switched us over from Excite@Home yet.

Actually Im on COX cable, they havent switched over from @home yet but they are going to do it in 2 weeks.

The computer on Comcast Im talking about was/is a friends.
I havent heard him mention anything about a difference yet...YET.
We Spoofed the NICs MAC address in the router and he is back up and running now.
Seems that several Cable companies are leaving @homes Nameing system (your CX number that allowed you to connect) and going to MAC addresses....FYI.


Ill let you know if I hear anything regarding Comcast and the speed.
