Please help a noob out, is this setup ok to OC with?

Post by ectoblast.com »

Hi everyone, i'm new here, i been doing some research on the overlocking scene..and it's great :)

But since i am a noob on putting together a pc, i was wondering if anyone has any advice on this set up, or any possible conflicts i might have.

is this setup OC'able?

Lian-Li PC-60+USB Aluminum Cases
SOYO K7V DRAGON+ Plus VIA KT266A ATX
ATI RADEON 8500 LE 64MB DDR
ENERMAX EG365P-VE( FC ). 350W Power supply
AMD ATHLON XP 1900+/266 FSB PROCESSOR CPU
CRUCIAL MICRON 256MB 32x64 PC 2100 DDR RAM
Seagate Barracuda IV 60GB 7200RPM ST360021A Hard Drive
Thermaltake VOLCANO 6Cu. Heatsink + Dual Ball-Bearing Fan, FAN Speed: 4550±10% RPM. Max. Air Flow: 32CFM. Pure Copper base
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Is the 1900+ xp unlocked? ( i think i know what unlocking means..hopefully)

Do i just have to do bio's changes to OC?

Any ideas and inputs would be greatly appreciated. You guys are very knowledgeable in here.

P.s. are there any guides out there to show how to put a pc setup like this together from scratch? with minimal amount of headache to a noob :)

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration. maybe one day i can learn how to mod, and make awsome case's like you guys. :]

Hmmm, lets see ....

- The XP1900+ is locked, so it requires some work to unlock the multiplier. Check http://www.overclockers.com or your favourite overclockers page for a howto on XP-unlocking.

- The HSF you got might be nice for the XP at stock speeds but you need something with more potential for overclocking.
I suggest something like the Alpha PAL8045 with a 39cfm 80mm fan or higher cfm but that would also mean more noise.

- The Radeon 8500LE can be o/c'ed but requires some work, search the forums at http://www.rage3d.com for more details.

Just up the FSB and see how high it goes at stock voltage, run PRIME95 for an hour or so, if it doesn't BSOD/reboot it can be considered stable.

Once you reach max speed at default Vcore you might want to try upping Vcore some and see if you can pust the bird a lil further. Increasding Vcore will certainly increase the heat-output and require very good cooling.

I guess you might be able to push your bird to ~1800 raw MHz with good cooling and oinly FSB overclocking. Taht would be with FSB @ 145. Try upping the Vio for more stability.

The next steps would be to unlock the CPU, do a Vcore hack and step up to watercooling. Mod that case, it asks for it. I have the old PC60 and I have window/neon, alu-painted drive bezels, a 2-row LCD in one bay and watercooling (external due to lack of space inside).

I hope I could answer some of your questions, feel free to ask when you need more info.

Go here for XP unlocking guide and here for prime 95

I believe you can do far better than that volcabo 6 as Doc said. One that I suggest is the Senfu. In my tests it beat the sk6, and the sk6 is known as one of the elite cpu coolers out there. Senfu is new and not as well known, yet. Beware the included fan though, it's way too loud. I use a fan off a volcano II in place of it and that cools it all very well. Using the same fan on the sk6 and then on the Senfu, the Senfu was 5 degrees cooler under full load than the sk6. At $20 it's the best bargain out there and with the performance. The alpha is awesome too as the Doc said, I just haven't tested one yet.

Need anymore help, just ask. ;)
