Error Message

Post by nitro237 »

I am running Vista Ultimate and Firefox. My email app is Windows Mail. When I click on a link from my email I get the following errror message

Image

I have went into control panel and I think I have made Firefox the default browser and Windows Mail the default email handler, but still get the message.

It seemed to have started when I installed MS Office 2007.

I can't seem to figure it out.

It gives me that error, and then continues to open the page in Firefox just fine.

I would try re-installing FireFox. Do you get the same error if you open with Internet Exploder?

I don't know, I haven't used IE. I have Firefox as default.

The default association for URLs has been screwed up. I see this all the time with a variety of applications. You have to re-register the association.

Easiest way to do that is to run Internet Explorer and make it your default browser. Then close it and open Firefox and make it your default browser.

Hopefully that will reset everything.

I'll try that when I get home. Thanks

If can be very hard to fix problems like this.

Make a restore point first and then make IE the default browser, then try both the URL and HTM/HTML association fixes here: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

See if that fixes it with IE as the default. If it does then change Firefox to the default.

If that doesn't work then your best bet may be to use system restore to go back to a time before the problem occurred (always go back a week or more before the problem).

Hope this helps.

When I make IE default it works fine.

I tried those reg fixes but the url fix would not install, an error about xp, and I'm running Vista.

I think I might uninstall Office, since I think that is when it started this crap.

Doh.. Now yer shooting the wrong person lol.. It's not FireFox's fault that MS has an issue lol I've been digging around and can't find a solution or you.. But I'll keep trying. I've never had a problem, but I won't use Vista either..

Yeah, I know it's not Firefox's fault, but it doesn't do that with IE.

Can't figure out why the error message says "Windows cannot find", seems like it should say Internet Explorer or Firefox cannot find .

It's almost like windows is trying to open the link and not IE or FF.

That very well could be the answer.. That's what I'm trying to determine if there is a setting that I'm not aware of that could cause this..

Sorry, my bad, I assumed you were running XP. Those registry patches are only for XP.

There are some file association fixes for Vista here: http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/1 ... Vista.html

Don't see one for URL though, although they have them for HTM and HTML.

Have you tried System Restore yet?

As a last resort try downloading Firefox 3 beta which should take over the URL file association and hopefully fix it in the process. Then you can set it back to Firefox 2 (you can have both installed) or just use 3 which works fine, just doesn't support some add-ons yet.

Hope this helps...
