I'm getting sick and tired of the yellow ribbons...

Post by FlyingPenguin »

/RANT

I live in an area with a lot of retirees. Many of them have the requisite "Support the Troops" magnetic ribbon on the back of their car.

By implication if you don't have one on your car, then you are assumed to not support the troops, or you're a commie, or an anarchist, or gay or I don't know what.

I refuse to buy a $5 (and often more) magnetic sticker that will eventually grow mildew under it, mar my paint job, and get blown off every time I go through the car wash (the local car washes all make a brisk business of re-selling used ribbons that get blown off vehicles).

I can support the troops more usefully by paying my taxes so that (in theory) the government will buy them the body armor they need. I also prefer to give my $5 or more to the VFW.

I don't need to wear a tacky plastic yellow badge of honor on my car to proclaim my support for the troops.

/END RANT

I hear you FP. I'm a commie to because i refuse to put one on my car.

Have you heard of Adopt a sniper? I've made donations in the past and will do so again.

I actually just see it as a personal choice. I choose not to have one and most likely never will but if others choose to have one or ten it really does not bother me, and I really dont get why it bothers anyone else.

What gets me is the color of yellow. Who decided on this color? Isn't yellow the color of a coward?

what bothers me is that its a magnet.. so when it gets old and its not cool to support the troops you simply take it off. If it was put on with emblem glue then it would mean something.

Doesn't bother me. To each their own. It is their business after all. Though I do agree yelllow was a bad choice.

Some here have up to 4 of various color schemes, some have none. Or some do as me and have simply a magnetic flag. Which I do remove when washing my car.

Various bumper stickers I find far more annoying. And tacky.

The Yellow color has its origins in a truly ghastly early 1970's song by Tony Orlando and Dawn. It symbolizes "Welcome Home, your are loved."

I'd like to ge a company to make up black ribbons that say "Enough with the Ribbons" or something similar...

My .02: I wouldn't worry about it. Personally, I don't think that you are a "commie by implication" if you don't have one. I don't have one either, but I still support the war in Iraq. Did you have a run-in with someone over this issue or something? Or are is there some part of you deep down that knows you *should* have a yellow ribbon? ;) ;)

According to google (http://www.google.com/search?q=origins+of+yellow+ribbon), the origins aren't quite clear, although many believe it goes much farther back than the 70s
