Apple is trying to push out iOS 10 to my iPod touch, and I really REALLY do not want it.
I'm happy on iOS 9 and I only use this device for listening to music, podcasts and audio books.
Even though I have disabled auto updates it STILL downloads the 1.1GB update package and then nags me every 24 hours to install it. You can defer, but in the past I have accidentally pressed the OK button (for a minor update that didn't break anything). You can delete the update (Settings -> General -> Storage & iCloud Usage -> Manage Storage, but every time there's a new update it downloads it and nags.
So I found this page that has instructions for blocking the two URLs Apple uses for iOS updates. Corporations are using URL filters to block updates when they are using in-house apps that don't yet support iOS 10.
I used the Access Restriction menu in my Tomato firmware router to block those two URLs. When I try to check for updates I now get an error: "Unable to check for a software update".
The main URL to block is:
mesu.apple.com - Apple's Mobile Asset Software Update service. Provides an XML file with information about available iOS updates. When blocked, devices cannot determine that a new update is available.
The other one is optional:
appldnld.apple.com - (Optional) Apple's iOS and software repository. Where devices will actually download the iOS update from. However, other software and updates are also provided by this URL. Blocking may not be desirable in all environments.
I can confirm, however, that blocking both does not prevent access to Store apps and app updates.
