Quick Review: Star Trek Beyond

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Saw it today with the wife.

Let me just say first off that I was not a big fan of the first movie. I enjoyed it as an action/sci-fi flick, but as a Star Trek TOS fan I feel they pissed on Gene Roddenberry's grave. The first movie also had a ridiculously weak plot. And don't get me started on how someone gets promoted directly from cadet to Captain of his own ship. Sigh...

The second movie I DESPISED.

So I was not expecting to like this movie - especially after watching the trailers - but I DID like it. It's the closest they've come to capturing the feel of the original series. There was a lot more of the camaraderie between Kirk, Bones & Spock without it feeling phony. Good action, decent plot (still had plot holes in it big enough to fly the Enterprise through, but what Trek movie doesn't?).

Worth seeing in the theater IMO.

I liked the first 2 well enough. This one was OK. The villain/doomsday weapon seemed pretty weak, but the characters seem to have settled into their skins very well.
