race car driver survives high-speed roll

Post by darcy »

Spectacular footage has emerged of a driver losing control at more than 280km/h and flipping his car 15 times in a blur of dust and debris in an attempt to set a land speed record.

The dramatic crash took place on November 10 at El Mirage dry lake bed in California as driver Brian Gillespie tried to break the 200mp/h (321km/h) mark in his Hasport Hondata Insight car.

The trouble began for the racer as his car began to veer sideways at high speeds, sliding sideways before flipping violently 15 times.

The car appeared to disintegrate as it tumbled, eventually coming to rest on its roof.

Fortunately for Mr Gillespie the car's roll cage remained intact and probably saved his life.

He was airlifted from the scene reportedly suffering a collapsed lung and heavy swelling but is said to be out of hospital and now recovering at home.

Despite writing off his car and injuring himself, Mr Gillespie managed to cross the coveted 200mp/h milestone on his previous run.

WHY in a Honda Insight? This whole story sounds like an oxymoron.

Seems odd to me that anyone would try going that fast on sand in a car that's not a salt flats type car. I wouldn't even think of trying that.
