you pick the incorrect HD and the pc won't boot.

Had my daughter's old pc on the work bench. I also have several HD's laying around for making copies of files etc. After I removed the mobo to replace the cpu heat sink and fan, I put it all back together and turned it on. Gets to where the screen says, missing NTLR (or something along those lines). Hum...

After booting from a XP disk and attempting a repair using fixboot option and then fixmbr, I discovered my problem: I INSTALLED THE INCORRECT HD. :s mackme

I must of wasted almost 45 minutes until I figured it out. Jeez...nothing like having a brain fart.

Yup, that's happened a few times to me. What really gets me is when the mobo switches the boot order back to default when you add a new drive (MSI, I'm looking at you).

Fff, MSI nothing. I have an ECS board that would change your boot order every time you plugged in a USB drive or a memory card into one of the slots. And no, pulling it out and restarting wasn't enough, it was a permanent change. I actually got rid of that board just for that. Worthless BIOS.

Anyway, back on topic:

I once accidentally switched hard drives in customer's PCs. A couple of basically identical Dimension 3100s, had to run hard drive error checks on a bench PC. Got them cleaned of the bugs they had, and sent them off to their respective homes. Then got two calls from a couple of very confused customers. I felt like an idiot, but they were both (thankfully) very understanding.

Fff, MSI nothing. I have an ECS board that would change your boot order every time you plugged in a USB drive or a memory card into one of the slots. And no, pulling it out and restarting wasn't enough, it was a permanent change. I actually got rid of that board just for that. Worthless BIOS.
Same with the MSI. Drove me crazy. Got rid of mine for that reason as well.
