I've come across my 2nd one today. Seemed like too much of a coincidence so I Googled it.
Apparently it's a very common problem. The MiniPCI slot for the Wifi card just dies. Replacing the card doesn't help (I tried that). Best advise I can give customers is to buy a USB or ExpressCard Wifi NIC.
They've sold a LOT of these laptops under both the Compaq and HP brand. It's one of the most common budget laptops out there.
