Unless you're on a bridged connection (highly unlikely - they're usually only used for businesses with Static IPs) you need to program the new modem with the proper settings for your user account and ISP. You need to contact tech support at your ISP and have them walk you through this. Configuration varies between ISPs. You probably have PPPOE which means at the very least you need to configure the new router/modem for PPPOE and enter the username and password of the account in the PPPOE configuration menu.
However there are other settings that may need to be set on the modem, and there's also the possibility that your account is locked to the MAC address of the old modem and they'll have to enter the MAC address of the new modem into their system to allow it to recognize it.
