System won't shut down any longer

Built a duron 950 for a bud years ago and under '98 it shuts down automatically when you go to start, turn off computer. Upgraded the ram and installed XP, now it says "It is now safe to turn your system off" but hangs and will not shut down even if hitting the power button. ahhhhhh Have to use the rear power off button on the psu.

Obviously something power related but what. I changed acpi in the bios to every setting. Changed some settings under control panel/power. Still the same darn thing. This must be something simple. Anyone? I be your buddy. :)


Everything else works cherry but this annoying problem.

Did you upgrade it from 98? May just need a clean install of XP.

I just built a win2k server that does the same thing, weird huh?

Is it all updated and current? I think microsoft had problems with that and they released a patch for it. But then again I may be thinking of the wrong OS

Sorry for not being clearer. It was an upgrade from '98 because he wanted to keep everrything else.

Tried all the updates, still the same weird problem.


If there is a patch for this I'd sure like a link to it. :) Haven't been able to find it.

Bill, here's what I did.

Go to start --> control panel --> Display

Once you double click the Display icon click the screensaver tab, then the power button on the bottom right.

Now click the APM tab at the top,

Now at the bottom you will see a Power Management section!

Make sure there is a check mark in

Enable Advance Power Management Support

(thanks to a google search)


Doesn't make sense, but it worked. Now it shuts off completely. :)
