Bad news guys, ive started a new obsession-- i want a DATA WALL! my original plans called for a 4x3 matrix of 12" LCD screens for a true 16:9 ratio being controlled by 12 "heads" on 3 pci graphics cards. however, it seems that the cheapest i can get 12" lcds for is $350 each and each of the 3 quad head matrox g200's id need would cost about $600 to $700. total project cost is estimated at over $6000, quite a bit of money for me. So ive decided to scale back to a 3x2 config in a 12:6 ratio, very close to my target of 16:9. this way i can use the $150 or less g200 dual head cards for a total estimated project cost of about $2500. So if any of you guys know where i can purchase cheaper LCD screens or quad/dual head graphics cards, lemme know! Id be will to give u all my stuff in trade at a good rate if we could do a deal! well, bump anyways

heck yeah it does! erm... i mean, i wouldnt know

but imagine being able to display multiple applications open at the same time! say, youre writing a report in word on one screen, youve got encarta open on another monitor, and third monitor is either tuned to the cable or playing a dvd movie. of course you can have your mail software open on a seperate screen and a couple internet web pages open to different sites, all at the same time. that description isnt only feasible, but its frequently what i end up doing when i get on the computer! no to mention the 6 instant message windows open at the same time! a side benefeit of course would be the big screen gaming possible. imagine the possibilities

the datawall wont work for several reasons, dernit! well i sold some stuff this weekend and im bumping whats left. id really like to get rid of the 2 burners and the h+ card, if you have a 16x pioneer ide drive, id trade you straight up for my hp 8x. gotta get rid of this stuff!

aside from the pain in the ass of having 3 dual head graphics cards, the cost would be prohibitive for the results i would get. at $350 for each 12" lcd, and about $120 for each GF MX dualhead, the price would easily cost $2500 and for what? you cant even maximize a window on ALL the screens, the maximize function only maximizes a window on ONE screen. of course you can manually drag each window to the desired size across all monitors... that wouldnt be so bad if that was the end of it, but it isnt- games will only play on the PRIMARY display, and performance would be only so-so with a GF MX and much worse with a g450 if i went that route. ive seen one setup where a guy got quake 3 and unreal tourney on FIVE monitors, side by side for a super widescreen game, but it was in linux and only for a few games. plus each display could only handle 320x240 or 640x480 at the most, and on an lcd with a native res of 1024x768, it would look like shit. he used CRT's so it wasnt quite so bad, but im sure it was still ugly. so at this time, with the current support for multi-monitor in windows and direct x, it just isnt worth it. im not giving up hope totally however, maybe one day, years and years in the future, direct x games will be written with multi-processor and multi-monitor support for some kick ass gaming. what i wanna make then, is a 4x3 matrix for widescreen gaming with the screens all angled inwards, in a half-circle to envelop the user. THAT display would be worth $1500 to me! speaking of multi-processor support, did you guys realize 450mhz P2 xeons with 2MB (TWO!) L2 cache go for $110 now? insane! anyone looking to make a 1.8ghz multiprocessor monster for less than the price of a single p4 cpu should check it out, who knows, i may invent a need for a multiprocessor system pretty soon just to have such a kick ass system. imagine it, FOUR processors, SWEET! ok, enough rambling, ive got another class in a few minutes, i better go eat

btw, i sold most of the water cooling stuff, a few items left!
