How much RAM?
How much RAM?
I'm going to have some spare cash next month so I'm planning on doing a major upgrade. Haven't had one in 2 1/2 years, so it's time. I currently have a gig of RAM, and was wondering if that's still enough and will last me the next couple years, or should I spend the big bux and go for more? The most intensive things I use the computer for are gaming and DVD copying, what do you guys think?

I still feel 1Gb is all anyone needs right now except MAYBE very serious Photoshop users.
Keep in mind most modern mobos support dual channel mode which means better performance, but in order to use it you need two matched sticks.

kicked my main rig up from 1 to 1.5 but really don't notice that much of a difference - unless I have a game like WOW playing in the background and I go do something else for a while like surfing, etc., additional apps seem to load faster

Hi, I have 2 GB total - 1GB x2 , as FP says I only notice the difference in photoshop when you handle huge files , I would say in files over 5 MB up to 40+ MB you can see that extra power but besides that 1GB can do almost everyhting.

1 gig is plenty for what you do. F.P. is pointing in the right direction though. If you are still using an older motherboard with less than pc2700 or single channel mem, then the overall speed will always be choked. I have never owned a machine with less than pc3200(400mhz). The few times that I have had to use a machine with pc100 or 133 and single channel, I thought I would be eligible for social security be for it ever opened "My Documents". As cheap as motherboard/processor combos are these days, you would be wasting you money on more mem. Also mem timings make a but load of difference. The next time you buy memory, make sure the "Cas Latency" is below 3.
