exstended warrienty for a western digital hd opinions ?

i just looked /got a new western digital 80 gig hard drive and it came with a 1 year replacement waranty . it has a special offer in it packaging to extend it to a 3 year for $14.95 .

here is what opinions i'm looking for .
1ST - would you spend the extra cash to extend a one year warranty on a hard drive .

and

2ND - do you think the the end is here or near . for hard drive companys ( or other computer compontent part makers ) giving longer then one year warranty on there product. unless you pay a special extended warranty price for it over the retail . price you already just to have the unit !

im not going to pay for the extended warranty !
and yes i think we will be seeing more and more companys doing this type extended warranty sales because it will make them lots of cash . and most that people pay for this service but never use !

ANYWAY WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK ?

I'd spend the cash only if it was for a large disk that cost more than $150, otherwise no. I think WD still gives 5 years on their Raptors, so maybe its time to switch completely over to those

I do it for clients. but for my self, I live by the seat of my pants...when I even have pants on.

It burns my ass that all the manufacturers only offer 1 year on most of their drives.

That said, yeah if it was a 120+ Gb I'd spend the money on the extended warranty from the manufacturer - it's worth it.

Damn drives have been dying like flies on me lately.

I just buy the "Specail Edition" WD drives with 8MB buffer or the Maxtors with 8MB buffers, they come with 3 years. In three years the drive might die, but then we will have terrabite drives and who wants a little 250 gig then anyway??

I mean really, MS software will take 150gigs for an OS anyway by then

Anyway for real, I do buy the 8mb buffer drives, only a few dollars more and they have the 3yrs instead of the 1yr that comes on the 2mb buffer drives. Also I order my drives OEM, mostly newegg.
I wonder if the 3yr drives might actually be made better since they offer the longer warauntee on those. Buying the extended though will do nothing for the quality of manufactoring.

So far I been lucky and never had any of these large ones die yet. My only failed HD drive was a WD 13gig years ago, and it was within a few months anyway.

One of the things I wonder about with 1yr and 3yr drives, does a 3yr go through stricter testing than a 1yr? Or are the 1 yrs drives that barely pass testing and would be considered seconds otherwise?
Do they figure it will last close enough to a year, but not last much longer, and pass those to us??

I never buy an extended warauntee on anything myself. I look at all the things I own and figure the cost of those add ons and the number of times in the last 15yrs I would have used one and I see it would have cost me a terrific amount of money and I would have never used any even once! And now they would all be expired anyway, so it would have been throwing money away for nothing!

I have a working TV from 1988 and a VCR from about 1993, Those sales people really pushed to get me to buy those extenededs, must have been getting comisions on them. Anyway I didn't buy the extended and way after it would have expired anyway I had to have both repaired (5yrs ago?) and it cost me about $45 total. Extended waruantee was about $60 for the two.

I was dumb once and bought several hundred dollars of Sears Craftmans power tools and bought the extended. I still have the tools, they still work great, and I never took anyting in for service, so I waisted alot of money there! 1988-2004 and the power tools are still working

I wonder if they will make it 20 yrs??

It's kinda all a crap shoot really, they are gambling you won't use it, and you are betting you will.
Course the one thing you don't buy one on, will be the one thing that dies on you early.
