Comp starts up...but doesn't at the same time

OK I am workin on the GF's dad's comp..
80 gig maxtor that is about 5% full
problem...
all of a sudden the other day none of the icons on the screen would show up
now whenever you reboot the pc and log back in, all is will show is the desktop wallpaper, and if left long enough the screen saver kicks in...no matter which user you log in as
it's WinXP pro has 300+ megs of ram and is a P3 650

I have tried doing an alt ctrl delete while it hangs at the wallpaper, that works, I tried running a new task and running explorer... didn't work
I have MSconfiged it as well, choosing to start in less! then safe mode... still nothing... it hangs when you hit F8 and BOOT into safe mode....
wtf??
it almost feels as though I need to F&F it but I can't because they have some stuff on the comp that I need to save...
any help??

god EPHING damn it...

I started it up agian, hit alt ctl del and then started closing things
looks like it's a virus...
I closed services and it did the
Your computer is shutting down NT authorities blah blah f@ckity blah...
ARGH.....
