ARRRRGGGGHHHH!!! Something new that I need help with...

Post by Demrok »

Ok, got myself some new parts for my PC
MSI K7N2 Delta-L
512megs or 400mhzDDR
and a new AMD Athalon 2600+

My problem... I can't share my DSL with the GF's computer, and I need to get her internet....before she kills me... :) seriously....

I did a fresh install of WinXP
I have the onboard NIC and and the DLink that came with the DSL package in MY computer
(I have done this before and it worked without a hitch) I network my comp to hers and then I set the net up on my computer, fiddle with the network settings and presto! she has the internet and so do I...only thing is this time... I have the net and she doesn't....sometimes she can sign onto MSN and AOL but webpages do not work at all...*the net works almost 100% for me... except for the fact that it;s slower then normal...*

anybody know how I can set up my DSL so it runs without a hitch?? LMK PLEASE!!!! ASAP!!!
Thanks guys!! (And more then likely...Flying Penguin... :D )

There's usually not much to is. This is a DSL conenction and you're using PPPOE right? I assume (hope) you're using the built-in PPPOE client in WinXP?

Just enable Internet Connection Sharing on the PPPOE connection (you DO NOT enable sharing on the NIC connected to the DSL modem).

Frankly I'd just go buy a Cable/DSL Router. It's a heck of a lot easier, more secure, and she can access the Internet even if your computer is turned off. They've gotten as cheap as $40 now.

yeah everything you wanted to know is right, PPPOE, built in WinXP Client (shitty Tango software...)

and here's the kicker... I DO have ICS enabled on the PPPOE connection, she can use MSN and AIM and ICQ, some pages such as Google and hotmail take a few seconds (15-20) to load but they work, where as others like PCAbusers and power97.com do not work...

is there a setting on my PC or hers that I am over looking?? maybe?
every other time I have done this it has worked without a hitch, takken maybe 15 minutes to set up, so I have no idea what's wrong now....

any ideas? throw em at me!! :) thanks FlyingPenguin!

Well if she can bring up Google it's not a DNS issue. Maybe something simple like a bad cross-over cable? I've seen intermittent problems like that on a bad cable.

Maybe it was barely making contact on one wire before but when you moved it around it got worse.

If you made the cable yourself let me tell you it's EASY to make a bad cable.
