soundcard not workin...

Post by JD »

I reinstalled win2k on my machine finally (HD sh*t the bed apparently). Anyways, I remember having this issue with it before. The card is a standard SB 16. The drivers are installed right, but windows says "the device cannot start (error code 10)" when I click on it in the device manager. Now in the past, I remember playing with the IRQs got it to work eventually. It is trying to use irq 10 at the moment. IRQ 5 is the only other avalable one, and it has the same issue when assigned to that one. Now, my real question is whether or not these IRQ's are not valid for this type of hardware. I've tried switching some of my other devices, but they won't even allow me to enter in a manual configuration. Any thoughts on this?

I can't see how the IRQ could be an issue. The SB16 has no known issues with IRQs.

Moving it to another slot sometimes helps but if it used to work okay in it's present slot then it should work fine now.

Have you tried re-installing the drivers?

Also try downloading newer drivers.

As an alternative you could buy a modern CMedia sound card for $16 here: http://www.newegg.com/app/Viewproduct.a ... hFor=AW850

Much better card than that old SB16 and you shouldn't have any IRQ issues with it.

Hope this helps.
