Sub or Dub, what floats your boat?

Postby DocSilly » Tue Apr 01, 2003 5:51 pm

I started with dubs all the way, I have some 60 or 70 VHS that I bought a few years ago, all dub'ed. I thought it was the way to go.
Then I switched over to DVDs, and even though most also included japanese soundtrack I was still listening to the english dub.

Fast forward to the end of 2001, I survived 8 long months of dialup after I returned to Germany and I finally got DSL. Somehow I found Armitage's Dimension, a 128k/s MP3 stream that sends anime and jpop 24h and features a request setup.
They also have a chatroom and I met some people in there that shared some fansubs with me.
Hmmm, fansubs .... the japanese soundtrack certainly sounded funny at first but it didn't take long and I prefered it that way.

Since than I'm a fan of subs. It's also the only way you'll see the stuff that's currently airing in japan, as a fansub.

Some anime should never be dub'ed, especially Azumanga Daioh. But sometimes you find a jewel where the english dub actually sounds almost better than the original soundtrack, like Cowboy Bebop.

So, lemme know what YOU prefer.

I too started out the same way... then i watced FLCL, now its sub all the way.

And yes... Cowboy Bebop has a awsem dub. I cant believe how close the english voice actors sound compared to the japanese.

I prefer to watch dubbed eps. That way I can concentrate more on the animation instead of reading the subs.

But the problem with that is that most of the dubs i see....they are so hacked that they take away from the story line adn there are loops in the story. (FUNImation is a BIG contributor with that).

So if that happens, then I will watch the subbed eps.

So i can go either way with subs or dubs.

Sorry to be indecisive, but I will do both anytime. I agree with Doc, some thing like Azumanga should never be translated (too much cultural stuff to make sense to us stupid Americans :p )

Honestly, with some shows, it is just which I see first, sub or dub, that decides which I like better. But for some classics, aka Rurouni Kenshin, either are very good.

However, as Doc also said, you have to do subs if you want to see current stuff. That's how I saw things like Azumanga Daioh, Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu, and Tenchi GXP (which was not as impressive as I was hoping...)

well seeing as its been a few months since I voted on this, i guess I could post an update :)

Right now, my subbed outnumbers my dubbed anime, and I have gotten quite used to reading the subs that now it seems like watching and listening to a dubbed soundtrack seems like a nuicence

I duno... i seem to find that most fan subs are better then the stuff you get on DVDs. I buy the DVDs to support the people makin the anime so they can keep on doing it. Personaly i wish some of the big companys would pay or make it worth their while to use some fan subs. I like the little stuff they add at the top explaining a few things to make certian jokes work that normaly get missed in a standard DVD sub.
