Network Probs!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!
Network Probs!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!
Well all of my cable problems lately have been related to my computer... new modem new nic still no connection... my computer with 3 different nics will not get a dhcp release from the modem... hook the modem up to the server or my gf's computer and those will get a release no problem... i don't run dhcp on my router i config it all manually. but if i hook up my computer to the router, the router loses the connection to the modem... as far as acting as a hub i can ping any computer and they are all there but i lose the dhcp release from the modem... unplug my computer from the router release and renew and i get the renew and all is good to go.... So what exactly could be causing this to happen... i haven't tried a different patch cable from my computer only because i can still ping and get no packet loss when i ping the other 2 comps on th network so that tells me the cable is good. could be a possibility its bad though... I'm lost i'm about ready to reformat and reload but i sure don't want to do that cause its a fresh install as it is...

okay let me get this straight, you hook up NIC to cable modem and you get no dhcp release or renew, have you inputed your isp ip address to that adapter???? Is the option for tcp/ip settings to auto get ip from the dhcp server from cable company???? first of all router is not loosing connection, make sure that all the info is typed in correctly in manual ip config on router, and on your nic tcp/ip settings.
example router settings
Wan IP 192.168.1.101
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway Address: 192.168.1.1
DNS(Required) 140.123.52.256 some have 3 or 2 dns servers
TCP IP SETTINGS ON NIC
you created a lan IP right???
if your lan ip is configured to 192.168.1.1 then that is your default gateway.
ip adress:192.168.1.100
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 140.123.52.256 type in all dns that are in the router dns settings
this example of it, you would need to input your numbers into the settings

it don't matter what nic or router i hook my modem up to it will work... the only MAC address the ISP needs is the MAC of the modem so that it can get its dhcp info it needs... For some reason something got fubar in my network settings and was causing the NIC to deny access when i had the NIC set to DHCP. I could manually config it for my router hook it up and see the other computers on my network. But for some unknown reason when i did this with the cable modem hooked up to the router... the modem wouldn't give the router the dhcp info. If i unhooked it... the router would get it just fine... I ended up dumping all of the networking out of XP and it wasn't fun and reinstalling it all... its all good now everything is working fine so far. just hope it stays this way.
