Plextor problems

Post by NascarFool »

I have a Plextor 40x12x40x IDE and just recently it decided not to burn CDRs. It will burn CDRWs without a problem. I tried burning an ISO to a CDR at 20x and it attempted to burn at 1x. Eventually it errored out as bad media. I burned the same ISO to a CDRW at 10x without a problem. Hell, the CDRW disk was lightly scratched too. The above burning was with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.1 Platinum with the latest updates installed and WinXP Pro. I also tried burning on my lappy with the same program and it worked fine. Is my Plextor junk ? :(

I tried firmware 1.02 (original), 1.03 and 1.04. This drive hasn't dropped one coaster until now. Believe it or not, Plextor support responded to my email today (Sunday). I don't buy his response and I just might have to switch brands of drives now. Good thing I have a LiteOn 48x24x48x on the way. Here is the response from Plextor:

"That sounds like a media error. In particular we hear from lots of customers having problems with Memorex and 'no name' media.

Media quality will directly affect your recording and playback experience. Plextor has spent significant time testing many brands and speeds of media. Those that consistently perform well are included in our media compatibility list. Some brands of media vary in quality from plant to plant, and even from batch to batch. We cannot guarantee the quality of media not included in this list. "

It looks like Plextor will join the "Do not Buy" list along with Yamaha. :D

Probably just a bad one that I got. I've always heard good things about Plextor drives.
