mixing ram speeds - 2400 with 2100?

Post by Hipnotic_Tranz »

I have a 256mb stick of Micron that runs at 2400. Would it be alright to slap in another stick of micron that runs at 2100? My motherboard only supports speeds up to 2100 so I'm assuming it's just running the 2400 stick at 2100 right now anyway.

Just curious if this will work? I figure it will but thought I'd check first.

Thanks :) Hey, while I'm here, which route would you go. I already have 256 and I want more ram cause BF1942 is beggin' for it :) Should I add another stick of 256 or a stick of 512? Is 512 ram total fine or do you think I would benefit more from getting a 512 stick thus making my total RAM count of 768?

I had 512 and added another 512 just for BF 1942 (well I also added it because I do Photoshop work and that's a hungry beast too) - it's a major ram hog. According to task manager, peak commit memory after running BF 1942 is 575Mb, so even with 512 you'll be disk caching.

Mixing the memory is no problem as long as you're not over clocking it.

I'll probably just get a 512 stick then... How big should I make my swap file? I've always heard double your RAM, but if I have 768, that'll be one big ass swapfile. Currently it's 512 since I have 256mb of RAM.

With that much RAM (anything over 256) I'd leave your swap file settings alone. Defaults work fine and any changes are liable to cause problems.

With as much memory as you have you'll rarely use the swap file anyway.
