Finally got myself a semi-decent PC...

Post by ClockerDude »

Some of you may remember that I was posting a few months ago asking questions about a Celeron 300 that i was going to build. Unfortunately, i was unable to get the CPU, and that project never happened. However, i have been able to get my hands on a Pentium 166, which I was recently given. It came with 64 megs of RAM (2 168 pin SDRAM DIMMs), no video card or HD, but a floppy and a 40x LG CD ROM. I have since installed a 1.2 gig HD, an OLD piece of junk TsengLabs ET4000 video card i pulled from a 386, and the SoundBlaster 16 from my dead 486. At the moment, its running Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Service Pack 6, which I must say runs a LOT nicer than i expected. Next school holidays, I hope to really get my hands greasy, and do the following upgrades:

1. Ditch the tired old TsengLabs board for an S3 Trio or Voodoo2
2. Stick in another HD (must be done ASAP...1.2 gigs gets small fast)
3. Ditch the P1 for an AMD K6 233 i may be buying from a friend
4. Replace one of the 32 meg DIMMs (not that important...64 megs is quite a significant step up from 8. ;-))
5. Grab that full size AT box i was going to stick the Celery in

Anyway, thats it from me for now. I just thought you may like to know what became of my upgrade plans. :-D
Long live Linux!
