Hey all, thanks for reading :)

You kow all the startup thingies that are on your taskbar next to the date in Win98? Well, I know how to get rid of them by disabling in startup folder and using system tools and all that but 2 of them always resist. The annoying MS Messenger will reappear every time you're used Outlook (I use ICQ godd@mmed!!) and the Real Player Tray icon which will reappear in the startup every time you used Real Player. Grrrr, everytime I go and disable and then again the next time they're back. Anybody know how to block this? Costs me up to 8% system performance on these lil' shiats :)

Cheers

I beleive that in both of those programs there is an option you can check or uncheck to have a tray icon. I don't use messenger, but I will see if I can find where the option is in realplayer.

Killer, go to the Start menu and click on "Run".
Type; msconfig and click on "OK"
Click on the "Startup" tab, there, you'll be able to disable all the "Crap" that you really don't need, that tend to slow down your rig ;)

Be Careful! don't disable things like "System Tray", and other stuff your machine may need. You can read what program it belongs to right next to the name ;)

Happy Thanksgiving ;)

EDIT: I need to start reading the WHOLE thread before I post :P hehe oh well, for those that don't know, it's here ;)

Real Player calls this tray icon thingy program the "Start Center". There is an option to disable it in the right-click menu for the icon.

If you need a step by step, just ask, I just did it a few days ago & its finally off of my taskbar for good.

Darn thing kept driving me nuts returning all by itself like that, Dont the "Real" people know this is MY PC!

Yeah, thanks for that all, I found it, too. You have to switch them off in the options or preferences menus of the software itself, just removing them from startup won't do....

And about the Real Player: Apparently it also snoops your registry and sends info out to the menufacturer. Surfing habits and stuff like that, just read about it. Some dude used a monitoring proggie and every time he logged on Real Player sent out atuff...and stuff not at all relevant to what it's supposed to do.

Ptolly the same with Messenger, too....bastids all of them :)
