What can be cleaned?

Post by Sean »

Hey, what things in my computer can be cleaned. I just got the internet running on it (a lot faster than our screwed up dell w/ DSL). I have looked in my Temporary Net Files, and there is tons of crap in there. Can I clear the whole folder? Actually, I just did that. Also...That TEMP folder, can I empty that out? There is 350 MB of files in it, and a bunch of stuff that I recently installed is in there.

Thanks,
Sean

If there's more than 10Mb in your temp folder, you should delete what;s in it. The safest way to do this is to reboot and then immediately delete everthing in it.

You should clear your Temp Internet files. IE stores pages and graphics in there so your pages will load faster. HOWEVER it's a very good idea to make the Internet Temp files cache less than 55 Mb - I use 50. Using anything higher can have very strange results - some pages won't load properly.

Of course the biggest space waster is your recycling bin. By default Windows sets it to a huge size. Realistically, few people need a recycling bin bigger than say 50Mb.

You should change your Internet settings. In IE, Go to tools>Internet options>temporary Internet files> and change the settings to 10 megs and check every visit to the page. This should make the page load faster. :D

Ok, thanks.

I just went to settings for the Internet Files, and my god, it was set to 1.3 GB!!! Jeez! I set it to 40 MB.

Also, FP, so what you're saying, is to reboot, and right away, before doing anything else, delete what's in the TEMP folder?

I clear the recylcing bin all the time, not to worry. :)

Thanks for the tips guys!
