Top 3 upgrades of 2001 ??

Post by VidmanII »

It's getting close to the end of the year so it's time to reflect back.

What were the top 3 things that had the most positive effect on your computer in 2001 ?

My answer is easy. I went from 56k dialup to cable. As for hardware, I'd have to say my Iwill KK266 mobos. :D Damn I love these things!!

1. cable (4160/1132 kbps) Is that INSANE or what?????? :D
2. Iwill KK266 mobos ( 160+ FSB !! whoever heard of such a thing back in March!! )
3. my first RAID 0 config

So let's hear it. What were yours? ::
AMD Ph II X4 955 BE 3.2 @ 3.8 GHz | Scythe SCSMZ-2000 | ASRock 880GMH/USB3 | 8 GB G.Skill DDR3 1600 | Radeon HD5670 | Kingston 128GB SSD

1) I stepped into the Dark Side and got an Athlon setup :) Best thing i ever did...

2) ATI Radeon 64 Meg ViVo Totally blew me away...My previous Nvidiot GeForce DDR couldn't hold a candle to speed and visual quality.

3) 17" Monitor.... LOL Hey i was using a 14 before so this was a nice upgrade... But the 14 would run 1024x748 and had a sweet ass clear pic... Nicer pic than this 17 but hey size does matter... lol

Windows XP is my only upgrade for the year. I haven't installed it yet (no time, waiting for Christmas break). Maybe Norton SystemWorks 2002 and Office XP count, because I got those too.
I also built another computer (Athlon 1.2) supposedly for my sister or brother, but my sister doesn't use it much and my brother's at college. I don't use it either for some reason.
Otherwise, I'm still plugging along with my 700E and GTS. It works fine since I haven't bought any new games for a really long time. Sports games run fine, along with CS. It should last me for at least a few more months. I'm thinking I'll upgrade when the new .13 micron Athlons come out, hopefully on a 166 Mhz FSB. I'll probably buy the latest and greatest video card too. But that's not 2001 so I guess I'll stop talking :)

umm...very few upgrades this year as i havent had much time to game

1) Yamaha 4x CD writer to LG 16x10x40

This thing is so much faster, and I can do anything I want without burning a coaster. Plus it burns safedisc2, can't beat that for 100 cdn or around 60 US :p

2) Sb Live Value to Sb Live 5.1

Not really an upgrade since I dont have 5.1 speakers...but the 5.1 was so darn cheap (around 25 US) that i couldnt resist. I figured that if I ever got 5.1 speakers it'd come in handy

3) Tie - extra 256 megs of RAM, or Win2k to WinXP Pro

The extra ram was nice, but not very exciting...Win2k was corrupted somehow, and instead of just reinstalling I thought I'd upgrade to WinXp Pro. Very stable for me so far, and it looks very cool, but I am having problems with my LAN (very very very very very slow)

That's most likely what I'll get ... I only hope they'll manage to hack their drivers so that Win2k gets full Hydravision support (2 screens, different res).
The 8500 will be a much better match for my tbird @ ~1550

The biggest for me has to be a tie. I can't decide on either the Vivo 64meg or da Tbird 1.4. Had v3 3k before so the Vivo opened my eyes to what 32bit gaming looks like. And mikey likes it. :) But then the tbird 1.4 from a p2 600@800 made everything so much snappier.

Then after I went to the tbird I also upgraded de ram from a measely 256-384(it changed frequently) to 768mb, then the photo apps I use were so much quicker. Later factor in win 2k and XP, no more lock ups or blue screens. I didn't know how to feel. <img src="http://www.pcabusers.net/forums/images/icons/lol.gif">

So I'd say:

1) Radeon Vivo from a v3 3k
the Tbird 1.4 from a p3 600@800

2) Ram upgrade(768 from 384)

3) XP (I just like it :D )

On the horizon the great swami sees an Iwill xp333 in me future. :) It wants me, it just doesn't know it yet. :D

Heck, I built me own computer!!! It was awesome, and now I'm addicted. I will be building computer for the rest of my life.

The only upgrade I performed on my computer recently, was adding another 256mb DDR stick of Crucial to my computer. That's about it. :)

Well, I bought a Ti200 to replace my GeForce DDR, installed XP and added some RAM (640MB now). Thats about it though, my P3 @1Ghz is still fast enough for the time being. ;) Oh, almost forgot about my Klipsch's!
