Archos 5 Android Internet Tablet
My review of the Archos 5 Internet Tablet with Android
Where does one start? First of all, I noticed my pretty much only downfall to the device... and that is its onboard speaker. The sound emitted from the speaker is of low decibel, not really quality, but pretty low decibel and this is on full out volume level. However, in regards to sound, you hook up a pair of headphones and the sound is spot on like you are there.
Everything is amazing and seeing how I have only had this device since last Friday I probably have not been able to put to use all of the things it can do. But to no avail, I have come pretty darn close in this short period of time... constantly fiddling with the device, finding more .APK files online (.apk files are like an .exe is to windows). To this point I have already collected over a few hundred Android .APK's.
The Archos labeled GPS which comes installed as a 7-day preview is amazing, but seeing how I was able to get CoPilot Live 2009 installed on the device and this works amazingly well I just might not buy the Archos GPS package. If you want to read a book I suggest looking up Aldiko as this program is magnificent and even has access to literally thousands and thousands of FREE eBooks. And when I mean FREE I dont just mean some lonely writer's excuse for a book, I mean things like Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness Lewis Carrol, Homer (The Odyssey and The Iliad), Sherlock Holmes, hundreds of Books turned movies, and the list goes on. It's like having a mini library right at the touch of your fingertips, and all the while being free. Ford Microsoft Office documents I recommend a program called Documents To Go, this will let you view and edit to your hearts desire... well not ALL the functions of Powerpoint and such though. The Internet experience is pretty damn fast if I dont say so myself. I have a little work to do to get ALL the bookmarks I need, that I use frequently, stored on the device. Haven't looked into any Firefox etc. .APK's but will do so. Video playback is FLAWLESS, I can't wait to buy the DVR station as I will be rocking full-on HD output to TV wherever I go as well as be able to browse or do anything I could on the Archos right on the TV. The device picks up FM radio stations... just like a radio would, no wifi needed. The built-in Music player is pretty darn cool and more programs like it can be found too.
Absolutely amazing, and I am happy contrary to what one comedian had said on Conan ;D. Of course, though, seeing as how this device has larger screen standards than most other devices the Android apps development will have to be situational with the device. Also, the main access to the Android Marketplace (for all the apps you want) comes in the form of Archos' Appslib program which essentially finds apps best suited for the Archos' layout specifically. Do not worry though just about any app will run on the device and finding another Android Marketplace searcher app is not all too hard to do. Adobe and Google, I believe, are working on getting all the kinks in Flash worked out specifically for this device so only time will tell how much better the device gets.
All said and done if you want an eBook reader, get this, if you want a PMP get this, if you want a GPS receiver get this, all said and done get this! I will do some more fiddling around with the device and report back, in the mean time I AM a Droid fan thats for sure!

I was planning to buy an iTouch for the wife for Xmas. I may have to give the Archos 5 a long look instead. The problem is that she wants to read Kindle books on it (which you can do on the iTouch). So unless that comes along for the Archos by the end of the year I'll probably get her the iTouch.

Ohh I forgot... the device has a built-in FM Transmitter. Thus, you plug-in the car charger to the device and you now how anything which plays audio on the device on your car speakers.
Also, I did a little digging, and Opera has a version of their software for Android out right now and Firefox is working on theirs. Tried out the Opera, but I must say I will stick to the modified version I found out there on the internets which lets me do a Double-Tap to zoom in (contrasting to the stock Browser which just shows zoom buttons).
Yeah I would say these would make a great little stocking stuffer if I dont say so myself.

Whelp, the source to Android 2.0 was posted this past Saturday/Friday so only time will prove on how much more this device can do. Ohh I did some playing around with it and decided to contribute to the cause and started creating a whole bunch of wallpapers for the device and have since been posting them on ArchosFans.Forums.com
Looked like the members over there needed some help with it so I played a little part in making their wishes come true.

As I speak I have a Headphone Jack to Stereo Out wire plugged into my Archos and TV listening to my Last.Fm radio stations! Awesome stuff. Also I found a free app called Gmote which turns the Archos into a remote control for playing media on your computer by way of wifi. The Gmote program also lets you stream media to your Archos from your computer! Again, awesome stuff.
Amazon's got it on sale for $190 shipped now. Hopefully, it'll hold out till I have some Christmas money.
DO NOT BUY THAT ONE!!! That was the prvious model (last year? not sure how old) but it is not the one with Android.
Archos could have made sure their names were different enough, but they didnt....
Search for Internet Tablet with Android.... that'll take you to the ones with Android.

Ohh touche... though. The one you linked to Normalicy is a good bang for its storage space and still has almost all the media functions the Android version has... but obviously not everything you get with android.
On a side note they (archos) just released the Android 1.6 Donut update to the Archos 5 Android... we're on our way to Android 2.0!!!

Well, I didn't end up getting nearly enough money this year to make a dent on it anyhow, so I guess I'm gonna have to save up the good ole fashion way.
Thanks for the warning. That is dumb that they didn't make that more specific. I do believe that I'd prefer to get the android version if I'm gonna make that kind of plunge on a media player.
