we will do that, too, when it gets here, DaMaN, ~ thank u for that.
he is just so frustrated because this is the 2nd refub'd lappie he has bought in just a few months' time. the 1st one he sent back; then he ordered this one.
as is usually the case, the manufacturer's short-term warranty ran out about a week before this happened, ~ but he did purchase a 1-yr warranty from squaretrade @ time of purchase. hopefully this will work out so that he can avoid having to ship it back. we have so much other stuff going on, that this latest crap w/his laptop just pushed him over the limit,,

Not a big fan of HP laptops to begin with, and the idea of a refurb HP laptop gives me the willies. I'm not even comfortable with the idea of a refurb laptop.
Unlike a desktop, there are many things in a laptop that can't easily be replaced or repaired. For instance, you have no idea how much life is left in the internal fans on a laptop, and it's not like they're easy to swap out.
Also a laptop relies greatly on the integrity of it's internal cooling system, whereas the worst that happens to a desktop is you replace the HSF.
My biggest concern about a used or refurb laptop is that the #1 common killer of laptops is liquids spilled on the keyboard. How can you tell if someone once poured a glass of water on it once? On a desktop, if that happened, the worst you'd be out is a $20 keyboard. On a lappy the whole mobo is under the keyboard.

well,, murphy's law paid us a visit last nite and, unfortunately, he was unable to get to it last nite, but the plan is to check it out tonight and see what's what.
*fingers crossed*.
my brother has several HP lappies, never a prob. { maybe i should say, "yet!" }
i have always used a notebook cooler w/each lappie i have owned, and he did purchase one, too, and had been using it.
*fingers crossed*.
i hear you, FP; it is hit or miss w/refurbs, but budget has been tight, so that's what he went with,,; he just wanted something for browsing, and e-mailing ~ nothing intensive,,FlyingPenguin wrote:Not a big fan of HP laptops to begin with, and the idea of a refurb HP laptop gives me the willies. finally, some results.
after cleaning contacts on all 3 sticks w/clean eraser head and use of compressed air, we've established that, ~
the one stick of ram that came w/his laptop is definitely dead in the water; and both sticks that DaMan sent us are working. he has both of them in the laptop now.
{ thank u so much for that, DaMan, ~ very much appreciated
