I've had a few cdrw's go out. One due to sand (Iraq), one due to extreme overuse (20 cd's an hour for 4 days straight, Iraq), and extreme heat (Iraq).

If it's not able to register in the BIOS, then take a look at this thread. I got something similar going on, but much much worse....
