Mike,
My uncle John has this as well. His was /is much like randys but he still drives. Its different for many people. 2 docs told him he would eventually go blind, but then he saw a specialist that said that his vision could be corrected somewhat, and the going blind was not in the cards.
Keep your head up and your mother in good spirits, and never hesitate to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion, we both know how docs can be

Thanks Bill :)

I agree on different opinions. She's going to what's widely considered the best medical center in this state, aside from Duke. Problem is insurance didn't pay all from her car accident because the other driver had a small limit and it's a rather large and slow hassle getting her normal insurance to pay for all her remaining bills. Her husband (the driver) had no insurance that would have helped.

The glass eye maker wanted 1800 upfront before they would even begin work on making her a glass eye, knowing the insurance situation. She may or may not get that back. Her hubby should have paid for it, but that's another story.

Sorry to hear about your mothers condition Mike. :( I know you and her have been through a lot here in the past few years. I hope the treatments can arrest the develpment to some degree if she decides to go through with it.

I was diagnosed with macular degeneration in my right eye back when I was enlisted in the Navy at the age of 20. Fortunately for me my condition is mild and only causes a small blind spot near the center of the eye's vision. I naturely compensated for it with my left eye and it's not gotten any worse for all these years even though it forced me out of the service back then.

Thank you Tony. :)

I know you've had your share of troubles this year too. Along with several others here. I'm happy to hear your macular degeneration hasn't gotten any worse.

Hopefully the new year will be much better for us all. :)

Everything will come out fine. It's not an easy time for her or you...

The worst part is the waiting, once it's done the the healing begins then things will start turning for the better.

Anyhow, I've said a prayer for your family. God Bless and here's to a happy X-mas. :)

Thanks guys. You all ARE the best. :) :chug

We go in tomorrow for that laser thing, then afterwards she can't be in any sun for 5 days. Had to cover all the windows. Has to leave the hospital covered up even. They say any sun will blister her very quickly. They have to put some dye in her vein first so I guess that causes the sun problem. Plus her eye will be very sensitive.

Best of luck to both of you Mike!!!!

Heed their warnings about sunlight all the Docs I have ever seen about this problem have sworn that the sunlight is the worst thing for it in general and I am sure that right after surgery that is even more so. I wont go outside without sunglasses with a good UV filter in them even on a cloudy day.

Thanks Randy. And for your very good advice. :)

Just got back a bit ago so thought I'd post an update. All went ok it seems. It's a maze at that hospital. :;

Mom will have blurry vision for the first few days then it should improve. She can see to walk around the house fine, but can't read or barely see the tv. But she never felt any pain. :)

Then have this same treatment in another 3 months, perhap more.

Thank you all again for your well wishes and prayers. :) It helped! :chug
