All my DVD -r disks work and look like the reall disk I backed up from.
Not sure why your CD r didn't work well, but you should do ok with a DVD r. Maybe your player did not like the way you burned the CD r.
There are various compatibilty settings for stuff. Video CD generally has lower quality settings than SVCD which is a bit more like DVD but still on a CD. DVD is best. They have there own standards, settings, which might be what the problem was. Like VCD is normally mpeg1, but DVD is always mpeg2.
So most likely you had a non compliant VCD and the player did not like it.
I have only made a few VCDs and they were from captures not DVDs, I don't know how you would go to VCD from a DVD offhand, but I know it can be done. Just not anything I've done myself.
