So I tried the razor and alcohol method. I got most of the crap off the thing I got all of it off the part that makes contact with the heat sink. There is still some around the edges though. I dropped it in the board and put a nice new fan/heatsink on it. The computer comes on. All fans spin. Lights blink, hard drive whirs, etc. But no video or POST beeps. This suggests it is shorted by the case, so I remove it from the case and fired it up. Same result. I tried removing all extras except for video and CPU...nothing. Video card is good as it works in my other box. Actually all parts are verified good except the CPU. I must have f***ed it up with that cleaning procedure. Oh well. I have an Athlon 2100+ on order with Newegg for $69. The wife is gonna kick my ass...

Forehead??
Most would have a lower opinion, much lower
When you get the new cpu make sure your system is working with that, then go back to the old cpu and fix it.
Look for anything you might have cut or scratched deeply, like a trace/bridge. If it still has gunk, clean more. Maybe you can salvage it? If you didn't cut anything or static shock it, I would think it should be ok?
I should think it would be hard to kill a cpu with alchohaul unless you soaked it in submerged in like 2" of it for awhile. Didn't break any pins did ya?
Some boards are touchy about installing the cpu too. I've read for some to aplie a slight presure while locking the bar, but others you sit in losely and lock the bar. Most it don't matter on I think though.
Didn't crush the die while installing the heat sink did ya?
