WinXP users: Media Player problem "Updating Media Library" - FOUND A FIX!!!

Post by FlyingPenguin »

I have a client with WinXP Home. The version of Media Player that comes with it CONSTANTLY pops up a window (and I mean like every 2 - 4 minutes) saying "Updating Media Library" or "Updating Track Information" (it alternates).

This takes a WHILE (like a minute) while a progress bar increases. It's accessing the internet during this time (cable connection).

It's annoying as hell.

There's NO CD in the drive when this happens so I have to assume it's doing this for the benefit of the MP3's she has in her "My Music" folder. I ASSUME it's trying to check/verify/update the MP3 song titles (why, I don't know) from an online database.

There is NO WAY that I can find in the Media Player settings to disable this.

Apparently this is a problem others are having, but I don't know if EVERYONE with XP has it. I've seen several posts in newsgroups about it, but no one has a fix.

Any of you folks know how to disable this stupid thing?

Thanks...

Never ran into that one FP, but............ use Winamp or MusicMatch Jukebox as the default player, rather than MS Media Player, and I bet it stops. LMK what you come up with.

<a heref="http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/board/de ... efault.asp[/url] </a> This is a link dadx2mj gave me. Someone there might know a hack to cure the annoyance.

Sethpa: I would but this person is a 70 year old computer newbie and likes Meda Player so I'm loath to confuse her with another program.

d_b: Thanks. Didn't find anything, but I left a post there.

understand FP, actually, there are a few things I like about the latest version of it. But it can be such a pain in the nether regions :)

FYI I THINK I've found an answer to this problem - haven't tried it yet.

Someone at TweakXP came up with it when I posted the problem last week:

Seems Media Player in XP Home (haven't seen this in XP Pro yet) shares your
media library on the internet by default (gee thanks Microsoft!)
