Well, I suck at combat with the starter ship. Otherwise slowly getting the hang of it.

Need a cheap joystick/throttle though, cause KB controls are a PITA and controller is only marginally better.

That's for sure. KB/Joy is the best option.

I haven't played it much except back when it was released, and was using a gamepad . It's playable with a gamepad, but yeah I need to get a good joystick.

And maybe an Oculus Rift while I making a wish list.

What sticks you guys recommend?

I've got a Saitek X52 which seems to work pretty well, but the only other one I ever had was an 80s $35 joystick. ED recognizes it and it is pretty easy to map. There is also a cheap enhancement fix I saw adding some $5 magnets to make it a little stiffer. I also got the ED Headtracker from the UK which lets you pan up down sideways, but it came right when I decided to give the game a break so haven't tried it. I'd love to try the Oculus, but right now my eyes are way out of phase in terms of focusing because of a cataract in one eye. Have and app't with the eye Dr in a couple of weeks. Who knows when the final build of the Oculus will be available. They keep pushing it back and buying other companies that make hand held sensors.

It does have rudder control by twisting the stick, which I find useful for fine maneuvering.

I'll be on later tonight after a dinner meeting if you want to wing up, meet up and I can drop some cargo for you to grab and sell for some seed money.
Should get you into a slightly larger ship with more capacity. That'll help you earn more cash. Especially if you run a rares route. That's a nice fun way to earn some credits and see some different areas.

Also, some of us play in a private group. You can get access to them if you're on FB and join a couple of Elite Dangerous groups.

As for FB, deleted my account years ago and have stayed off it since. I'll make a new one with one of the alt emails and look into the groups.

you're gonna need about 2mm for a decent cobra - it's good for trading rares which I found to be the best bang for the buck - it can fight and also outrun anything.

Well.. uh.. I have about 80K and a hauler so far with some minor upgrades. Was setting it up for mining, but so far the little pidly quick missions have been more profitable.

Yeah, the FB groups are REALLY helpful and there's a few you can join. I'll get you the names if you decide to seek them out. Good, fun bunch of people. FSU is in there as well as myself.
