Legislation is getting pretty stupid on the internet lately & it's only getting worse.

It's getting ridiculous. ISPs are being forced to be policemen and "safe harbor" provisions are being eroded, all because special interests are trying to force draconian DRM and copyright standards on everyone.
There's a treaty being negotiated behind closed doors right now that may impose a version of Europe's 3 strike rule in this country (3 complaints of piracy WITHOUT any proof or court oversight, and you lose access to the Internet for a year or more). Since this is being negotiated as a treaty IT MAY NOT REQUIRE CONGRESS TO VOTE ON IT AS LAW.
Read, weep, and then write your congressman. Original negotiations on this were started under the Bush administration around 2007. One would have hoped that Obama, being a proponent of a free Internet, would have abandoned this farce, but apparently it's still being actively negotiated.

Agreed, special interest groups are very likely do bring about a dark age of internet should their lobbying be successful. Much like the red light cameras, the loose rules on internet piracy are disturbing. It's taking away many of the rights that I thought we deserved all in the name of money.
I can see being kicked off one's internet as an excuse for that person to steal their service. I know that I have about 12 Wi-Fi signals around me & that's with my laptops crappy antenna. I'm sure I could get 50 or so with wave guided antenna.
