recent computer bugs

Post by fogus »

hey guys

i thought i would fist post about a really weird computer problem i am having as well as sharing about a bug i found in my computer.

ok, when a person normaly copies a file on their hard drive (sourse and destination being the same drive, or another hard drive) does their CPU jump to max? mine does these days, but i dont think it was always this way. happens on two OSs on my comp. thought this might be hardware related. let me know what you think.

and the other day i was typing late at night (as always). and my comp freezes up. the music starts skipping and stuff. the music was skipping every once in a while. i listened very carefully and there was a very faint click inside my comp everytime it happened. still not sure what was going on there, but i opened up the comp, just to see what was going on. i found a bug (yeah a living, crawling bug) inside my case. lol.

other than that my comp runs fine. the other day i was updating some specifications for a control computer that is used to operate building heating and cooling. some of the stuff specified were:

64MB SIMM RAM
256kB cache, Mach 64 video accelerator c/w 2 MB RAM
NEC XE15 VGA colour monitor
4.3 GB HDD
MS DOS 6.2
[the "MS DOS 6.2" is crossed out and "Windows XP" writen in by someone not all that bright. LOL XP on 64MB RAM!!]

ah, the good old days...

Wow. Frigging outstanding. I reccomend RAID, not RAID array, plain old RAID made by black flag... lol. It's about as good as the lizards we got out here. My computer's lizard count? Make that 5 confirmed Lizard kills. Glad to see it didn't destroy anything... what's your processor speed? what's your ide controller speed?

what is the difference between RAID array and RAID? i did a raid once, but i couldent get to many options about which stuff i wanted part of the raid (i tried 0+1, i think, but it turned out to be just a cloned disk type thing). Right now i have my page file on opposite drives (when i run win home on my D hard drive my page file is on C, when i run win pro on C my page file is on D). this seems to improve performance quite a bit overall, but right now my hard drives are suffering in performance because the CPU maxes out when i copy anything. what is "idle controller speed"? my cpu does 1.8GHz and i havent OC'd it at all.

RAID is a brand of bug killing poison

so, no one has a clue as to what the problem is with the HDD acting up? does anyone know what "idle controller speed" is?

thx

where do you see idle controller speed? sounds like something to do with power management. if it is CPU, then you probably have something running to keep the CPU at a minimum load.

if you are getting random clicking sounds from the HDD it is time to make a good backup of it and put it on another HDD. Probably should also use the new HDD and the one that is clicking; only use it for stuff that is not critical, like temporary storage. When they click like that, they could go at any time.

In Pikachu's responce he asks what my "idle controler speed" is. I dont know what this is ovbeously. I dont know what the clicking is from. I have two identical 120 GB SATA drives, both act exactly the same, and both have always given the appearence of perfect performance (other than when my power cable broke down and caused some corruption). i dont know where the clicking was from, it didnt sound like it was from the HDD area though. i think it was something else, but i cant be sure, it hasnt happened again.

oh, i see, IDE controller, means is it like ata 100 or ata 133? you got any other drives besides the SATA?

also, does windows set the size of your page file or do you specify yourself?

i have pagefile set at 2024 mb. i set it so that when i am on my windows home on my D drive HDD, that the pagefile is on my C drive HDD, and visa versa. dont know if this affects my problem or not.

i dont know what speed speed my IDE conrtroller is. my mobo has four SATA ports on it. i have a lanparty UT 250 GB mobo. where would i find this information? if this problem has not always plagued me, would it likely have anything to do with a 100 or a 133?

that board supports 133Mbps UDMA. stuff like that you can find in your mobo specs either from the manual or from google on sites that review hardware or sites that sell it.

personally the reason i would want to know what the IDE controller speed was would be to know whether or not to look for issues with the IDE cabling and/or compatibility issues with the HDD's but since you are using SATA, i doubt any of this would be the cause.

ruling that out, something else i would check is BIOS and the power management settings in windows. it is possible windows is trying to access something from a drive that may be going into suspend mode, or already in it. still pretty unlikely though if you are running a pagefile on the opposite drive from the OS. but still something to look at as far as your power settings.

also something to look at is your event log, check for anything out of the ordinary that happens around the times that the issues occur.

where is the event log? i have heard of this before, but i figured it was not windows software. does everyone have an event log and how do you get to it?

i looked at my event viewer and the power settings. the power settings look, well, nice. i have no idea what they all mean. nothing looks dramaticly scary, but how should i know. i will write the settings down. there was somethig about "drive hang" in it, but im not sure what it is. i will write it down next time i enter my bios.

my event viewer has lots of stuff in it (plenty of errors), but nothing that happens every time i copy a file, which is what i am interested in. any particular errors i should be looking for?

k, i just OC'd (you can read about it in the OC section). when i copy a file it just uses up a fair bit of the CPU now, not the whole thing. i also noticed that flying penguins crazy shooting cat uses up minimal CPU power, when before it took the whole CPU to view it (lol, my mom would have a fit if she saw a shooting cat like that. im sure she will walk in one day and go "oh, that is so evil! who is that cat shooting at? lol").
