A 20 pin power connector?

Last night I rebooted my main system and it would not boot back up. Lights and fans were all on, no boot. Anyway I try all the usual and end up thinking the mobo is toast. Then decided today to put a DFI kt600 mobo I had for a few months (never used) in a case that was by far the most pain in the ^%%$ case I've ever used.

Hook everything up, tidy the wires, install the drives , fans, etc.. Then went to plug in the power connector. WTF! It's a 20 pin one on the mobo.

This is an ATX mobo and says it supports AMD XP cpu's so why doesn't it have a 24 pin power connector? . I got it a few moths ago when newegg had a one day sale on it. Thought I'd use it as either another folding rig or a spare/backup. duh

All psu's I have here are 24 pin. It can fit with the last 4 pins overhanging, but what the heck is this? Would plugging it that way work? aaaaaahhhhhhhhh!

I'm using a dinky barebone folding system now to post here.

Geez, now I just noticed my dead mobo (maybe), a shuttle an35 n ultra also has a 20 pin power connector, yet I obviously had the 24 pin from the psu connected to it, and 4 pins overhung it. Never noticed that.

make sure you have the right side hanging over.

gotta love "ATX" standard parts! WTF is the point of a standard if they keep bastardising it into oblivion?

But how to know which is the 'right' side? Though it only seems to fit one way. Reckon I'll know soon enough.

I did find a cheapy 400w powmax psu that came with a case, it has a 20 pin power connector. No way would I trust that powmax with my main setup though.

Hey blade , it will fit only one way . Some psu's you can actually detach those last pins from the rest of the plug . They will have lines kinda like perforated (sp?) on the plastic plug to guide you . Antec is sending 24 to 20 pin adapters with their newer high end psu .

I tried various ways and found out you are certainly right.

On the new setup now with only the video card installed. All went just fine. The usual many prompts and had to install kt600 drivers. Thought I may have to do a clean install or get more errors. But with XP, it was a piece of cake.

Now to install the other cards one at a time. My Tv card, sound card and maybe a usb 2.0 card. Though this dfi mobo comes with 4 usb 2.0 ports in the back, and supports 4 for the front. Which this case has ports for.

Just never noticed the 20 to 24 pin diff. Perhaps because I have astigmatism.

I don't have a single 24 pin power supplies. They are fairly new and its still a standard its just 2.0 that has the 24 pin connector 1.1 or whatever is the 20 pin connector.

Installed the rest of my pci cards and all seems just fine. Didn't lose anything it appears and I made backups from the main drive beforehand just in case. Though I did have to re-install the sound card since it kept asking for drivers that weren't there. I did have to reactivate XP too. Didn't have to call in, just a couple clicks.

But I can't o/c with this dfi mobo.

Tried it and it wouldn't boot. Had to clear cmos. Wouldn't that have been a daisy. All screwed up again.

So it must mean the shuttle mobo is bad. I'll test it later to be sure.
