YES!! All my stuff arrived from NCIX, other than the USB 4 port and Microsoft Office 2003.

I have put everything together the way that was most logical and according to the motherboard manual. Just to be on the safe side I used a copper bracelet (made by Shmithers) attached by a wire to the case to ground me. I double checked the connection every once in a while with my ohm meter. I used 1300 watts of lighting power to install the CPU. :D I was too much of a sissy to scrape off the thermal paste that was on the CPU heat sync and then apply my arctic silver paste that I had bought. I hope this is ok. What is left to do is setup the software and stuff.

For my initial boot up I was thinking of having the cover off, just to make sure all the fans are working. I was also thinking of using my fathers laser thermometer to measure the temperature of the stuff inside the box. What do you guys suggest for the initial boot up?

I installed the drives first, and my only problem was that I couldn't install screws to both sides of the floppy drive. It is covered up by the plait that the motherboard sits on, and couldn’t be removed. Attaching the wires to the motherboard was the hardest part of the setup. I was very confused at first about which way I was supposed to put the on/of switch in. Then I realized that polarity isn't important on a switch (right?). there was a grounding wire attached to my USB ports, giving a total of 5 connectors for the top USB ports (front, in most cases, but top on mine. Cases as in computer case, not as in situation), however there was only 9 pins to attach two USB ports. Thankfully there was another set of 9 pins. How necessary is the grounding pin for the USB ports? How is the best way to tell polarity on the USB wires? Since I have two open places for USB connectors on my motherboard, could I buy more cables for USB connections to the motherboard and just leave them coming out the back of my case through an empty PCI slot cover?

Oh, and one great thing happened: I realized that my graphics card supports dual monitor output, in either VGA or DVI (comes with converters that go from DVI to VGA), and my card also outputs HDTV and S-Video singals. This is going to be an awesome comp. I really hope I can get another 17” LCD soon. I know my bro will want one too, so maybe he will buy one early and I can “borrow” it for a while.

What kind of virus protection do I need before I hook up to the internet to get my updates for XP? Is it good enough to just get Norton Antivirus, or should I get some spyware program too? I will be behind a router, if that makes any difference in security.

The case and motherboard and components really hooked together well. They were definitely meant for computer construction by armatures. When I screwed the motherboard on to the standoffs, I noticed that there was metal around the screw hole on the motherboard. Am I supposed to use rubber washers to isolate the screws from the motherboard, or are they supposed to touch? It looks like they are meant to ground the motherboard to the case, but I just wanted to double check.
And thanks again for all your help, it has made everything go very smoothly so far.

did you put arctic silver AND the thermal pad on? only use one or the other...it is possible to have TOO much arctic silver...and the pad is far less effective at heat transfer. check your temps in the BIOS and if they are ok then i probably wouldn't mess with it more (unless you're planning to overclock)...but if they are a bit high, get that pad off and only use the paste.

sounds like you're doing fine so far....I would install norton or whatever you have beofre going on the net...then just us microsoft spyware proggy....you will learn after a while that you can actually drop most of the parts on the floor and they will survive....hehe....but i remember my first motherboard install..snowing outside etc. ...enjoy and keep us posted!

I you haven't powered it up yet..
I woundn't hook up anything thats not absoultly nessecary for it to run for now. (Like those extra USB's.) You can worry about those later.
Just make sure it posts first.. check all fans, look at the bios and become familiar with it, Make sure it found your hdd, check temps..ect..
Once that all looks good give it an OS and mobo drivers first then cards (if any) and work from their after
up to the little extra things like the reset switch and hdd light.. You don't NEED those for first power up. Just saying putting an led where a reset switch needs to be in the right parirty could pass enough current to act like a shorted switch.. Prolly not, but ithats the way I've alway gone about a first power up.
Let us know whats going on. Good luck!!

Make damn sure you're behind a router or enable the Windows firewall before going online. Until you install the latest updates, you'll be wide open to some virus attacks like Sasser and MSBlast.

FLAWLESS STARTUP

Post by fogus »

ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS!!!

Perfect boot up, guys! Thanks a million. I formatted the hard drive and installed XP. Everything worked perfectly, there was not a single error.

Temperatures (degrees centigrade):

CPU: 41-50
HDD: 26-30
Chipset: 45-55
System: 30-35
Air: 24-28

Do these values suggest that I have my stuff hooked up right? What do people recommend for CPU and Chipset? These are the only ones I'm worried about.

Voltages:

CPU: 1.43-1.51 (VERY rarely below 1.47, but I did see 1.43 once)
5V: 4.95-5.00

I have most of my fans turned up pretty high right now, and they seem quieter that way. They are all LED and they look great in my case!

Graphics card is AMAZING too. I'm thinking of installing Nero soon, because my DVD drive didn’t come with it. Is Benq pretty compatible with Nero?

SATA HDD is pretty fast, and usually very quiet, although when it is doing some serious grinding it does slow down a bit.

I have not connected to the internet yet, and yes, I will be behind a router. BTW what does a router do for safety? Does it actually make things safer? I thought it was just a splitter box.

My MX510 mouse is also amazing. It moves pixel by pixel if I move it slowly enough, which is a very nice addition since my old mouse was very jumpy. I like the speed enhacement thing on it too. I always thought normal mice were too slow. Now I can click accurately with out even moving my hand to reach for the corner of the screen.

Thanks so much again guys. I really owe my success to you. Building a computer was not nearly as hard as I thought it would be.

Congrats on success!! :chug

41-50 isn't bad for cpu temp and is about normal. Is there a heatsink on the chipset? I not then I'd add one. Either way those temps are nothing to really worry about.

As for Nero, I've been using it for years and with many drives and have yet to have one not work with it.

A router is a hardware firewall but I'd also use either (or both as I do) a software firewall like kerio (free) and have windows xp firewall turned on. These days one needs all the security one can get. Plus kerio gets many things the other firewall misses. You'll have prompts, but they are easy to figure out.

If you don't hav an anti virus then I'd get either one of the below. both are free:

Eeenjoy! :)
They are all LED and they look great in my case!

Any pics? :d

There is a heatsynk on the chipset, but no fan. How to upload pics? Shmithers had no success.

I got mcafree and I will download those setups to my external and transfer them to my other comp by USB.

I just got the screen today, cupple of hours ago. 17" LCD 8ms, 600:1. Supprisingly we had a hard time finding a DVI 19", but I did get a 17" DVI so I'm happy. Looks beautiful. 1024X1280, so I'm not getting anything worse than if I had got a 19".

I will upload pics when I get the info on how to do it and when I get the final setup worked out.

To show pictures you must have them uploaded to any website. Geocities use to be great for that and for free but have stopped. Yahoo.com I believe offers some free pic hosting. Otherwise your isp 'usually' gives you some webspace.
