Weird USB Card Reader Problem

Hello all I was given one of THESE I got it all hooked up and working but am having one strange problem with the card reader in it. I have a 64 meg Compact Flash 1 card for my camera. I can put the card in the reader and it pops open the window showing me what is on the card. I can then do anything I want with the pictures until I pull the card out of the reader. After that if I reinsert the memory card it wont see it. No matter what I do it acts as if there is no media in the reader until I reboot the system. Once I reboot I can read the card again but only one time. Once it is pulled out of reader it wont read it again until next reboot. System specs are

Epox 8RDA+
Barton 2500
1 gig PC2700
Win XP Pro fully updated
All the latest drivers

I have looked around in the BIOS and played with everything having to do with USB with no joy. All other USB devices work fine. Any ideas guys? Do you think I just got a bad unit, odd that it works once per boot tho. TIA for any ideas

Dad, it's you 8RDA+ mobo I'm afraid. I have had similar issues with mine, and I've seen others also post similar problems.

The 8RDA's USB support is a little flaky. I had problems with all kinds of card readers I tried.

What would sometimes happen is that the reader would go to sleep after a certain amount of time and you couldn't easily wake it up.

I'd also have the same exact problem you're having - usually unplugging the card reader from the USB port and plugging it back in would clear it.

I've also had problems with the card reader failing to respond if there was an external USB hard drive connected to another USB port., and the only way to fix it would be to unplug the hard drive to get the card reader to respond.

Moreover, I'd get delayed write errors on the external USB hard drives (tried two different makes).

The 8RDA doesn't seem to like some USB hubs either.

All these are known issues with the 8RDA+ and as far as I know they have not been fixed.

I would recommend buying an add-on USB 2.0 card and disabling the internal USB ports.

My 8RDA+ got moved to my LAN party system after my recent upgrade (no USB problems with the new Asus A7N8X-E mobo) and since I never use a card reader or external USB drive on that rig, it's not a problem.

Yeah I was afraid of that. I know the 8RDA has had USB issues but I have never had any until now. Might have to look into a add on USB card I guess. Thanks FP.

I am getting failure to write error on my USB drives. I heard it's from the onboard USB chip and that getting an add-on card will help. Good luck with your and let me know if it helps.

ran into the same kinds of problems on my kid's box - I think I was able to set it to only do usb 1.1 in the bios and that fixed it - don't remember exactly - had a similar problem with with another kid's 8rda+ but one of my "helpers" put in a password at the bios screen and can't remember what it was ...lol - there was a big thread on this at the old amd mb.com - probably the easiest fix is the add on card

HA! I have had enough boots thank you. Ordered an add on USB 2.0 card today. There are not a lot of them around that have a header with pins as opposed to a standard USB connector. OUt of 40 some USB cards at Newegg only two had the pin header I need.
