Hey guys,
Think the HSF in my wife's PC may be going - it's the retail AMD one that came with the 2100. Making a noise that I'm pretty familiar with and is telling me nicely that the fan is going. Just as well, as I'm not to happy with the cooling of it anyway, full load with a very very slight overclock (1.76Ghz cs 1.73Ghz heheh) and she's at 57 degrees or so - to warm for me.
I'm looking for a real cheap HSF that'll do the job and allow me some upgrade potential - Ego showed me this one which goes for $5.50 + shipping. Is this a good deal? Will it cool the proc well enough for me? Anyone know of any other inexpensive ($10 and under) HSF's that'll do the job?
I really want to be in the $10 and under area here, it doesn't have to look pretty or anything, just cool well. I'm hoping to upgrade the processor when the new AMDs come out and the prices on these fall. Which lead's me to my next question!
This may sound stupid and newbie-ish (Granted though, I've been out of the loop for awhile, damn industry - miss a beat and you have to catch up hehe) but since my MB has the KT-400 chipset, can I use a processor with a FSB higher then 266? Right now I've got a 2100 in it with a FSB of 266, and (at least looking at what newegg has) the highest 266 FSB CPU they offer is a 2400. I was hoping to grab an XP2700+, but they are all 333mhz FSB. I know my board can do up to an XP3000+, but I'm not sure if CPU's are backwards compatible like ram is.
cheap HSF selections? ANd an AMD Q in here too hehe)
That gc69 is about as good and cheap as one can get for around $10. It's decent, just not for overclocking. Some places had a sk6+ and ax-7 for around 15. I think svc or case-mod.com
And new heatsinks are needed for the new athlon 64 cpu's. Current ones will not fit.
An xp 2700 with 2700 ram should work if the moboi has an adjustable pci divider, or you have an nforce mobo.
I tried a 2500 on the gigabyte (no divider) I had and it killed my hard drive. So it is risky.
