P2P Virus!

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Holly Smokes. I did NOTHING but run Kazaa Lite (I don't use it much - haven't run it in months). Suddenly McAfee goes off like a Christmas tree!

Detected this virus: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100152.htm

Looks like I picked it up last time I ran Kazaa since all the files the virus created were dated about that time.

Sheesh. I'm going to start wearing a rubber when I surf then Net...

hmm... well judging by the looks of it... you have to DL one of the files it makes (mostly crack files) to get it. thats how it spreads it seems. I mainly use KaZaA to get unlicenced Anime. and i havent gotten it yet.

Well I admit I do pickup the occasional crack file, but that's a rarity. Let's face it I'm in the IT business - I can get just about anything I want from a client. I mostly use Kazaa for music and video files. Sometimes No-CD patches but I think I'll stick to GamecopyWorld for that.

Spooky stuff. I think that's the first time I've EVER gotten a virus. That's enough to put me off Kazaa for a while.

That is why I use my PII 400mhz sitting to the left of me to download files off Kazaa. I didn't want to risk my good machine. :)

Glad it was caught before it did more damage.

Actually that's what I used to do. Probably should go back to doing that.

I have several virtual computers I can run on this workstation using VMWare (handy for walking a client through a procedure on the phone). I have Kazaa Lite installed on one of them. Then I got lazy one time when I was looking for some music for my father's photo album and installed it on the workstation.

I'm using emule (ed2k network client) and luckily no p2p worms so far on that network.

I posted a thread here a few weeks ago about it:
http://www.pcabusers.com/forums/showthr ... adid=26029 Probably not the same type of virus, but nonetheless, it's still a concern if you are using P2P software.
