Longshot? kernel stack inpage error

I'm getting this dang error, "kernel stack inpage error" which is a BSOD in XP (I hear it happens in 2000 as well, *shrug*) quite frequently lately. Anyway, it's totally random, it can happen anytime... surfing, gaming, opening a file, etc. etc.... it even friggin happens when it's just sitting there when the screensaver is on! This thing is driving me nuts. I always know when it's going to happen as well as it will just hang there for about 5 seconds, then bam, BSOD.

All I could find searching the web was this:

There's additional things I guess I should read on the bsod page next time it happens to try to pinpoint it. I checked for a virus, nothing. When it happens I have to power down my computer, as a simple reset will not detect the HD. It then does a chkdsk, which never finds anything. I think it may have something to do with my HD, as I had some problems with it last month, it had some bad sectors and I had to reinstall XP. I thought the bsod error would go away but I still have it, but the HD seems to be OK now.

I feel this is a longshot due to me not finding anything useful on the net about it, but has anyone ever run into this error before? If I can't fix it I may just have to get a new HD...

I haven't had that problem but when I use 2k sometimes things come to a halt.
I found if I go to task mngr. and kill the
"Power saving" I dont have the problem anymore.
just a shot in the dark.

I'd be real suspicious of the drive or the controller. There's no good reason why a reset shouldn't detect the drive.

That article you linked to also seems to imply a hard drive or controller issue.

If a modern drive has bad sectors it's not good. In the old days a few bad sectors were normal now and then, but generally today a drive only gets bad sectors when it's going.

Also it's possible your controller is flaking out - and that's what caused the bad sectors originally (I've seen bad controllers create "fake" bad sectors too).

First off I'd replace the drive ribbon just to play safe. It's cheap, you probably have a dozen of them lying around if you're like me, and all it takes is an intermittent cable to cause grief.

Also download the drive test utility from the manufacturer's site and see if it detects any problems.

Then examine your background apps very carefully. See if there's anything that might be the culprit. Those BSODs I had last week SEEM (so far so good) to have been caused by somekind of interaction with Ultramon2 and my Savage4 drivers. Uninstalled Ultramon and all is well so far.

Temporarily disable anything you don't need for now.

The bad sectors alone are enough for me to RMA the drive. Ask them to cross-ship if you haven't got a spare drive.

I just recently had the same exact problem. My comp would hang then it would BSOD and upon rebooting my DVD and CD-RW weren't found (only drives on on-board controllers). Turns out that a file that was being used by KaZaa was corrupted or something because even a defrag of the partition BSODed my comp. I deleted the file and all the problems went away. Any file sharing apps running? It could also be that bad sector.

Kazaa = BAD. Run Adaware then install Kazaa lite.

So much old unsupported spyware out there now, and it causes all kinds of problems.

Oh yeah i use Kazaa Lite w/ Kazaa Tap but I just said kazaa as a general reference. Any file-sharing apps that might be using a file to download something.

I have power saving disabled and I don't run any P2P programs. I use ad-aware regularly, and I generally keep a "clean" system. All I have running in the systray are ICQ (have for years), Sygate Firewall, RivaTuner and AVG Virus scanner (I doubt any of these are the problem).

FP, I think you may be right about the HD or the controller, that's what it seems like to me as well. Next time I have to power down I'll change the ribbon (I think I have a spare) and see if that eliminates the problem. If not, I'll have to live with it for now, I'm going to be doing a major upgrade soon anyway, but I'm waiting for renewal of contract at work next month...

Well I changed the ribbon and it still did it! AAAARRGGHH!!
