DVD Rom drive advice?

Post by Lmandrake »

My son got a 5 out of 5 on an AP exam, so it is time for a little fatherly bribery. He has mentioned off-hand that he wants a DVD-ROM for his PC and I don't know anything about them except they look like CD drives and play DVD's too.

Are there any differences between one drive and the next? Do I need to know anything about decoding?

BTW his system is a 1 gig Tbird box with a KT266a chipset mainboard and a GeForce4 TI 4200.

Thanks

Tou wont need anythign for decoding. your system is MORE then fast enough.

Cheap and work GREAT!

And as always nomatter where you shop...put PCAbusers.com in the comment section. :)

That is a great deal. :) I have a Pioneer VD rom that is quite and reads anything I throw in it. Might want to check one of those out too.

I second the Pioneer Slot load...I have had two ... love 'em
But ... not too much difference beween one or the other.
Just like your average CD ... one might make more noise then the other

I Personally love the SLOT load feature.

My immortal pioneer 6x dvd drive went out a few months ago. :( *moment of silence please*

Since then I've tried an afreey 10x and a lite on 16x. Seems the faster the drive the noisier they are. The lite on I have does well but you can hear it spinning at times.

I have a Pioneer 6x dvd drive slot load, and love the drive. Nice and quiet. The Toshiba drive that Greg linked above is also a decent drive and at a great buy.

i have a 10x toshiba and never had any probs - toshiba seems to make pretty good drives - i still have a bunch of 24x cd drives in service - they are much better at reading "cds handled by kids" than the newer ones
