Dang, this is annoying.
How much cooling do you need for an AMD 761 NB?
How much cooling do you need for an AMD 761 NB?
Ok, well, my radio shack fan is whining again. I found a few 40mm fans, one being 14db. Do i even need any active cooling? I have tons of air blowing right on my NB from my AX7. I just wish I had pin holes, but NOO, the 7DXR doesn't have those... bah! That means I have to buy some adhesive..I don't want to. I want a fan that will last longer than two months, and is quiet. Right now there is a little dinky heatsink on there, like 10 mm high. Could I just unhook the fan for now? Or, what do you reccommend?

I also found this:
http://www.colorcase.com/40quietsilfa.html ... Nice a quiet, I think i will be getting that fan. It will fit, and it is quiet. But, the question it, does it move enough air to cool my NB?
I want this one: http://www.antec-inc.com/pdf/40mm.pdf But I can't find it anywhere, only place is here: http://www.techonweb.com/shop/products/ ... ?id=535033

Hmm, ok.
Anyone know where I can get AS 2 Adhesive for cheap? I have AS2 now, a TINY bit of AS Alumina, nothin much..
Also, do you know how I would get the current heatsink off? When i put on the fan last time, it felt really loose (I could move it back and forth) maybe if I keep doing that, it will just come off?

I would go with what Jim Z sugested. I have passive ones on most all mine now. Much nicer, and it freases up a Mboard header.

As for mising them....for a chipset heatsink, I dont see the major prob, but as for doing it to something you want the best heat transfers with I wouldnt. your heatsink doesnt use Push pins to attach it to the mboard?

Well, they have them on the + version. :-\ I am wishing I had gotten that, but it came out 5 months after I purchased my 7DXR..
Ah, this adhesive looks so complicated... http://www.arcticsilver.com/adhesive_instructions.htm Do i need the silicone that they reccommend? I am going to have to un-install my motherboard to do this, aren't I?
Any tips? What things do i not need to do? Crap, why can't they just have pins!

No, since the 761 is a BGA chip, it doesn't have exposed leads.Do i need the silicone that they reccommend?
It'll be easiest if you do (and I recommend that you do). Else, you can just lay the tower on its side.I am going to have to un-install my motherboard to do this, aren't I?
Here's what I did on my 7DX:Any tips? What things do i not need to do?
1) Carefully pull off old heatsink. If you can't get it off with your hands alone, try gently prying it up with something like a wooden dowel or chopstick. Do NOT use anything metal.
2) clean any tape residue from top of 761 northbridge. Use acetone or lacquer thinner. Don't be sloppy and get solvent all over the board
3) squirt out equal amounts of both parts of AS epoxy on a clean surface, a pea-size blob of each is more than enough. Mix throughly.
4) apply mixed epoxy to top of northbridge.
5) press heatsink onto northbridge, and check to make sure you've got a decent sized layer of epoxy on there.
6) let sit for about 20 minutes.
done.
Ok, sounds simple enough. So I guess it's pretty much permanent. If I ever want active cooling, oh well? Know of anyone that doesn't want some of their epoxy? Are you low? i will take you canister, for some price. I don't really want to spend $15 on adhesive if I don't have to. I probably won't be using it again, and if I can get a nearly empty vile, I will get it.
Ok, and say I do uninstall my board. Is it really that big of deal if I work on carpet? If I am continually grounding myself, I will be OK, right? Cause, well, our basement has carpet now, no cement left in this house, except for the furnace room, which is like 4ft x 4ft.
AND, would it be ok if i unplugged the fan for now? I want to see if it felly cuts down on sound. I am running 133 FSB, if that helps determine..
Thanks!!

I just realized something. You don't have to mix regular Alumina/Silver compound WITH Part's A and B? You only need Part's A and B? Correct? If so, than I will just get the Alumina compound.
Wait a second... Does the one at Cooler Guys come with epoxy?! I think it does!! YAY! But, maybe someone can verify that for me? (http://www.coolerguys.com/cpucool/video.shtml)
