Deviant Mouse Behavior (possibly related to new Video card)

Post by succubiss »

Hi all. I'll try to keep the story short and make this as simple as possible.

What's new: Installed Geforce2 GTS-V card and Det 23.11 drivers.

What's fishy: I uninstalled my old ATI Rage Fury, shut down Win2k. Swapped cards, Booted up machine. Immediately on the POST screen, lots of the english characters were garbled and swapped for other characters (ie. Weytern Dibitav and Mbcroyoft Winrowy 2''' Progeyyional, my first thought was OH MAN, Russians hacked into my computer!) In Windows 2000, the detonator drivers did not load correctly and the card was in vga mode. There were red and blue vertical streaks everywhere.

After rebooting a couple times with no luck, I tried this card out in my brother's machine, and saw the same garbled english in post and bios. I shut down one more time and booted up, everything was normal??? So I give it another shot in my computer and everything loaded up fine and dandy.

The only erroneous behavior right I'm experiencing right now is:
1. really slow mouse pointer refreshes. If I move the mouse quickly left and right, the pointer noticeably lags and skips. I'm pretty sure this behavior has something to do with my recent changes.

2. really lengthy periods between video setting updates (800x600 -> 1024x768 took about 15 seconds of blank screen)

Update:As I am writing this post, I discovered in Display Properties->Settings->Advanced->Troubleshooting, there is a notch controlling "Hardware Acceleration" with 6 settings ranging from "None" to "Full". If I take it down a notch, the mouse problem is corrected... hmm. The text reads:
"Disable cursor and bitmap accelerations. Use this setting to correct problems with the mouse pointer, or to correct problems with corrupt images."

Facts:
Video card: Visiontek Xtasy Geforce2 GTS-V
Mouse: MS Optical Wheel Mouse
CPU/MB: C2 533@800, Abit BH6 r1.01
OS: Win2K pro, Win98SE (havent troubleshot this yet)

Thanks so much for your time. Please LMK if you need more info.

EDIT:
One thing I noticed in both win2k and win98 is that IRQ 11 is shared by the Geforce card AND Promise Fasttrak Controller. Would this be the culprit? And how would I resolve this? I'm going to toy with this now.

I had a problem very simular to your text corruption before. At first it was random and rebooting or reloading the drivers seemed to fix it at least temproarily. The problem seemed to get worse and more frequent with time and ended up being the memery on the video card going bad. Maybe you will get lucky and all you will have to do is slow down the hardware acceleration like you mentioned. Good Luck

Hey dad, thanks for the pointer. I'm in win98 right now, and the mouse behavior is consistent.

At this point, all I wanna do is play some MOH at a decent framerate. I'm wondering whether I should start looking at an RMA... this card is an OEM from newegg.

another rma vote - i have a promise66 and an 8500 sitting on irq 11 in win2k - no probs - sounds like your vid card went for a ride in the microwave before u got it.

You shouldn't have to turn down video acceleration to get it to work. I'd say there's something wrong with the card.

Just want to say that I got my replacement and everything is working great. its a pretty solid card, i'm doing MOH in 1024x768 with pretty much everything optimized. Can't complain for $55 shipped.
