Program icons: desktop or taskbar?

Post by raz »

Is it just preference? Or is there a reason to go desktop or taskbar?

Preference I think. One click vs two. ALso desktop clutter bugs some people. With Quick Launch there is a difference but with the task bar I think it's just another way to offer apps which doesn't require drilling down the menus or digging down to the desktop to find the icon.

I generally create a new quick launch bar, fill it with shortcuts to my common apps, and stick it on the right edge of the desktop (a la NextStep/Windowmaker). To wit:

I hate it when my desktop is cluttered with millions of icons. I can stand one line down each side, but no more. I usually prefer only one line down on the left--but I'm just picky like that :) I have it so that the most used programs apps are on the desktop where as the game icons are either in the start menu or the quick-launch bar. I really like having an organized machine, but I think thats just my personality shinin' through :) I have several paritions, one for windows, one for games, one for music, one for movies, and finally one for misc stuff (patches, images, etc.)
